Ford and GM may have paired up down in the nation's capitol, but in the showrooms they're going at it as if there's no tomorrow--hey, maybe there won't be a tomorrow for one or both! At any rate, the new Mustang base model starts at $21,845, whereas the base Camaro starts at $22,995.
It also just undercuts the new Dodge Challenger, which starts at $21,995. Winner Ford.

They'll woo buyers who don't know their asses from holes in the ground with that line, but the Camaro is the hands-down winner with its powertrain that shames the rest.
For a bit over $1000 you get IRS and a badass 3.6L 300hp V6 vs the Mustangs solid rear and low powered 4.0L V6. Ill take the Camaro without question. Whos is Ford kidding here?
So by offering an inferior product for the measly savings of $1K makes Ford a winner?
Dats like saying a Chevy Aveo is the winner over a Honda Fit just cuz it's cheaper.
I'm going with everyone else here. Ford knew they had to drop that price. It should be lower. GM is the real loser here, because the Comaro looks and performs like it costs thousands more. Nice job with the refresh, though.
id take the mustang over the challenger just based on weight, but id much perfer the camaro for only 1 grand more.
no question that you get what you pay for in that.
the real loser is the Challenger. Without a bailout, Chrysler will begin downsizing next year which means parts will either become harder to find or nonexistent.
Yeah seriously; is Ford paying you guys? As much as a appreciate the Mustang's compact size and weight vs. the other two, it's worth AT LEAST 1 grand less than the other two.
+1 each HA4 & desmo.
With its ancient (I would say decrepid, but I can't spell it) solid rear axle, the 'Stang had BETTER be cheaper. Frankly, the price gap should be larger than it is.
But I am smitten with the sequntial turn signal, even if they are gimmicky. Wanted those ever since I laid eyes on a '68 Cougar. And by that I'm referring to a car.

lol
I can't wait to get my 2SS/RS Camaro.
+1 Bbechtel. Edmunds seems to be an enthusiastic member of the new Ford Mustang fan-boi club lately.
Lets see, Ford is selling the Mustang at virtually the same price as every other manufacturer. Even when you compare it to the Camaro and Challenger it's mediocre. Lets be honest, the Camaro and the Challenger aren't exactly earth-shattering innovations. They're simply the logical conclusion to what those companies saw work elsewhere.
Complete lack of technological innovation and creativity seems to be the defining characteristics of the big 3 for quite a while now. Is it any wonder they're begging for handouts???
Keep publicizing the new Mustang, Edmunds. Eventually, you might convince people that it's not a heaping pile of dog waste foisted upon them in a desperate financial time.
I'd pay more for the V6 in the Camaro as well.
Still, in the past Ford has done well in sales even with less power. Watch, they will still win the sales race.
If all I had was the money to buy a base model Camaro or Mustang and by buying the Mustang I could use the cash saved by not buying the Camaro to spend on something else, I would still buy the Camaro.
The Camaro has a MUCH better drivetrain. Better engine and better axle/rear suspension and for only 1K more. I'll bet it gets better real world fuel economy too since the motor won't be working as hard to move all that metal. Ford using the 4.0l which is really (i think, although I am guessing based on it's displacement and HP output) the same basic 4.0 that has powered the Ranger and Explorers is like GM using their old 4.3 to power the Camaro. Granted the 4.3 is still in use too but only as a base engine in their work trucks and vans
