2009 Detroit Auto Show: Shelby GT500 Skid Marks

burnout sized.jpg
#DAS09 Ford released information and photographs of its new Shelby GT500 weeks ago. So what else are they going to do when their press conference for the car rolls around? You do what everyone will do in a Shelby GT500 with 540 horsepower. You do a burnout.

All right, it wasn't a full-scale, rubber-flinging smoker. But there was a respectable amount of squealing as the two GT500s exited Cobo arena's concrete floor. And it did stink in there afterward. So that's partial credit.

One of the two GT500s -- the convertible -- carried crayon-blue paint with red stripes. When Ford gave us a sneak peek at that particular car a couple weeks back, a designer introduced it by saying, "Ladies and gentlemen, I give you Superman!" We're going to have to take off a few points for that. -- Daniel Pund, Senior Editor, Detroit

Those taillights blow, and the outsized Cobra badge isn't helping, either. The front mostly makes up for it, but I have to take off 5 more points.
