The 3 Series refresh is out and the 2009 7 Series is on its way, so the 2011 BMW 5 Series is the next logical step in the automaker's product plan. We've seen various 5-Series sedan prototypes before, but this is the best look yet at the wagon.
There's nothing unexpectedly different about the shape. It follows the same path it always has with nicely rounded D-pillars and relatively thin C-pillars which keep it from looking too bulky.
In profile, it appears as though this 5 Series will have some fairly spacious rear seats. The roof looks tall and the doors appear larger than usual. We know that BMW is also working on what it calls its Progressive Activity Sedan which takes the tall-roof idea to the extreme, so it's possible that some of the same thinking has been incorporated into the 5 Series wagon.
Don't expect to see the final product for quite some time. The 2011 BMW 5 Series is still at least a year away from an official unveil, so this wagon may not show up until late 2010.

BMW needs to bring this out immediately. The current one is looking old and sad compared to the current E-class. And the new E-class goes on sale late this year. Not good for BMW. Also, the new 7 pails in comparison to the S-class.
Haha fanboy. Did you know the current E-class design was introduced in 2003 while the 5 series was introduced in 2004? So how is the BMW the one that looks old and sad? Plus, the current 5 series design is way more edgy and exciting than the current E-class. When I see a 5 series I still think it looks fresh and new. The E-class, if anything, is the one that looks old. It was such a conservative design (i'm not saying it looks bad, it looks great). New 7 series pales in comparison? Wow how'd you get a test drive already? From what I've read (by people who've actually driven and seen the car) the 7 series should very much be a competitive car to the S-class. So you say a car looks old in comparison to a car that is even older and you offer your opinion on a car that so far has only existed in print. Very amazing set of skills you have! (end rant)
wow jippin, i've never seen a better case of the pot calling the kettle black. who's the fanboy outta the two of you?
A 94 ford taurus station wagon, some flat black spray paint, a few styrofoam cups, plus a few feet of chicken wire and - this car is yours Today.
hehe I was expecting that. The problem is, I gave legitimate arguments while he threw comments out that weren't based on facts (he calls the newer car the old looker?. I didn't throw out my comments because I am a fanboy but simply to counter the ridiculous things he said. And since all his comments were against BMW I guess to counter I had to say all for BMW? I totally respect and love Mercs (Black Series!!!) but I simply had to negate his strange comments. Any time you counter a fanboy you typically look like one, I know, but I don't have any brand preference at all. And I really don't care if you think I'm one because I don't give a care about brand and I think that if you read what I've just pointed out you'd also realize that I'm not a fanboy.
This argument is funny, but the new 7-seires looks gorgeous. The current line-up e60 5-series just got a recent facelift but it was really subtle, but compared to the rest of the current line-up, my favorite stlye is the e60 especially that m5.

I got a chance to drive the new 7 at a closed BMW event. It's tough to make the comparison of the new 7 to the S Class. The 7 is significantly more powerful and has one of the best suspensions I've encountered. And it's Less $$ upfront let alone the maint is free! The styling is subtle for what we've seen with BMW in the past, but I think will make a bold statement parked next to the Lexus or a S Class. (I shouldn't say the Lexus because Lex hasn't even reached the 2002 technology of the Bimmer yet). It's just BMW's turn to set the mark and I believe they have 4 sure. Maybe next time MB will surpass them - cat/mouse..
Sorry, got caught up with my zeal for the new 7. I think the new 5 will follow the lines of the new 7 or maybe some cues from the CS which should be a hit with those who didn't favor Bangle. Hard to tell alot from the fascia, let alone it's pre-production
2002 technology of the Bimmer... it was such a POJ in terms of "technology" (it has to work first) that no other manufacturers should ever catch up to, not to mention Lexus...
