To help launch its expanded line of F-Sport racy doo-dads, Lexus is offering this 20 percent coupon good through July for any F-Sport item.
The company now offers the stuff -- from intake to exhaust and wheels to engine covers -- for IS convertible and GS models. Because the stuffy Lexus is somewhat unaccustomed to such tactics, we've helped the company by adding a coupon-appropriate red starburst to their sober looking coupon.
Lexus is distributing the coupon through enthusiast web sites and has also provided it to dealers directly for use. Feel free to print out the one below and take it into your local Lexus dealer. As per usual, some restrictions apply and it should be void where prohibited, whatever that means exactly. Oh, and it's only good in the 49 states of the union which are not considered islands. Sorry Hawaii, but we reckon you've got it good enough as it is.

Since Lexus hasn't bothered to build an IS-F convertible yet, we went ahead and did it for them. Doesn't look bad, although we'll admit it chances of arriving at dealers soon is pretty slim. Would you be interested?

Sources in Japan have unearthed a few new details on the production version of the upcoming Lexus LF-A supercar. Yeah, you know the car that seems to only exist on autoshow stands and the Nurburgring?
Well, it's back on again and should make yet another auto show appearance in its finalized form at this year's Tokyo auto show in October. The attached rendering is based on both the recent Nurburgring prototype and additional details from an inside source at Holiday Auto, a prominent Japanese car magazine.
Our own insider also adds that of the 500 units destined for production, 350 of them will be left-hand drive. All LF-As will get 6-piston calipers with carbon ceramic brake rotors, titanium mufflers, run flat Bridgestone tires and a six-speed automatic sequential gearbox.
Let the comparisons to the Nissan GT-R begin.

Lexus has a new vehicle-based telematics system called Enform that will debut on the equally new HS 250h in late summer. Toyota had previously been one of several OnStar carmaker partners in the U.S., but OnStar is going it alone and is now available only on GM vehicles.
In developing an offshoot of the successful Japan-based G-Book and G-Link, Toyota's U.S. operation has switched its partnership to ATX Group, the other major telematics service provider in America. Toyota will have its own dedicated ATX call center.
There are two tiers of service categories for the subscription-based Enform: safety (which Toyota calls Safety Connect) and convenience. The safety tier includes automatic crash notification, stolen vehicle location, emergency assistance SOS, and enhanced roadside assistance.

A source has told Inside Line news that the latest version of the Lexus LF-A production car is now capable of hitting 220mph. Toyota engineers has previously expressed disappointment with the top speed of the earlier LF-A prototypes.
Changes to the car's aerodynamics and a few engine upgrades were largely responsible for the increased speeds. The same source also said that the final production car is expected to arrive at the Tokyo auto show in October with a price tag between $220,000 and $250,000.

As Engineering Editor Jay Kavanagh notes in his first drive of the 2010 Lexus HS 250h, timing is indeed everything in the auto industry. Had this new luxury hybrid come out last summer, its success would have been virtually guaranteed.
Even though gas prices are slowly rising, the clamor for fuel mileage has subsided significantly. Lexus might have to actually put a little marketing muscle behind this car, but even that doesn't guarantee any measure of succes.
Will it be the next Prius? Or a Honda Accord Hybird that never quite catches on?

In his first drive, our executive editor Michael Jordan tells you about how the 2010 Lexus IS 350C is a nice refined, relaxing car to drive. He compares it to a coastal mega-resort hotel styled like a Tuscan villa. No doubt, then, that this is exactly the sort of car you'll want to kit up with Lexus' F-Sport performance accessories.
That's right, you can put an F-Sport track-day brake kit and extra-large, dual-tip catback exhaust on your IS 350 convertible. If you're among the 0.0001 percent of 2010 Lexus IS 250C buyers who specify the six-speed manual gearbox, you'll want the short-throw shifter and high-performance clutch, won't you?
The thing is, we really liked the look of the F-Sport wheels and lowered suspension on the Lexus IS 250 F-Sport sedan we tested. But on a retractable hard-top convertible? Um, well, pass.

It lives. Yes, the Lexus LF-A still exists and it has returned to the Nurburgring, We assume it's moving closer to production, but that's what we thought the last time it showed up.
There are some minor bodywork changes this time around. The C-pillar treatment has obviously been altered and the front end looks a little different. Thankfully, the unique exhaust arrangement is still intact. If this on-again, off-again project ever gets finished up, expect to see it debut at this year's Tokyo auto show in the fall.

Lexus has introduced a new navigation controller in the 2010 RX crossover, and it might be the most advanced human machine interface (HMI) controller yet. Called Lexus Remote Touch, it's the first controller to deviate from the rotary-type paradigm that we've seen in Audi MMI and BMW iDrive. Remote Touch instead mimics the computer mouse, and it's the first controller both to have user-adjustable haptic feedback and the first to have this feedback on two spatial axes.

The car is a lot more complicated electronic device than any iPod you can imagine. When you're behind the steering wheel, there's a lot of stuff on the menu: ventilation controls, audio entertainment options, navigation system, calibrations for the powertrain and chassis. It's no wonder that car designers have been trying to figure out what to do about operating all this stuff.
Designers have long recognized that a simple touch-panel display possesses superior Human Machine Interface (HMI) qualities, yet they continue to seek a more elegant solution than the customary computer screen jammed in the middle of the dashboard. This is what led BMW to bring us iDrive in 2001, followed subsequently by Audi's MMI and Mercedes-Benz's COMAND. Now even Lexus is headed down this route to the remote-control device, replacing its widely admired touch-panel display with its Remote Touch interface for the 2010 Lexus RX.

J.D. Power's latest dependability study, which surveys the first three years of ownership, says Buick and Jaguar owners experience the fewest problems. Lexus, Toyota and Mercury rounded out the top five.
The single most dependable model was the Lexus LS 430. Toyota had the most segment winners with five (Highlander, Prius, Sequoia, Solara and Tundra).
There were a few other interesting pieces of information contained in the report. The average age of a used vehicle trade-in has risen from 65 to 73 months in the last three years. J.D. Power also said that overall problems have decreased at a rate of 10% a year since the beginning of the study.

Think you're going to save money on gas with the 2010 Lexus RX 450h? Well, you are, technically, but the up-front cost will render it null and void for the first decade or so of ownership.
So what else is there to like about this new Lexus hybrid SUV? It's more engaging to drive than its predecessor and gets better mileage too. Engineering editor Jay Kavanagh also found the new Remote Touch driver interface quite useful. Then again, he was disappointed with the rear seat accommodations and Toyota parts-bin interior, so not all is perfect in the world of Lexus.

It turns out the 2010 Lexus RX 450h will end up with better EPA fuel mileage estimates than the preliminary numbers we reported in the first drive. Specifically, the front-drive RX 450h has achieved the all-important 30-mpg combined figure against 32-mpg city and 28-mpg highway ratings.
The all-wheel-drive 2010 Lexus RX 450h has a 29-mpg combined rating against 30-mpg city and 29-mpg highway figures.
Given that the RX 450h weighs a whopping 450 pounds more than the outgoing RX 400h, which was rated 27/24 in front-drive configuration and 26/24 with AWD, these numbers are rather impressive.

Remember the IS 250 F-Sport we tested? Well, Lexus announced today that you'll now be able to get all those same accesories on the all-wheel-drive IS 250 sedan, the IS 250/350 convertibles and the entire GS sedan line.
That includes the F-Sport clutch (for all 2 of the manual-shift IS 250s Lexus will sell in 2009), Bilstein dampers, and front and rear brake kits that we loved, as well as the engine cover and obnoxious exhaust that we sort of loathed.
We'd like to put the lowering springs, Bilsteins and lightweight 19s on a Lexus GS 350, adding a much-needed jagged edge to this midsize wallflower. You can look at all the stuff on the F-Sport website.

Lexus has announced pricing for the redesigned 2010 Lexus RX 350, which arrives at dealerships this month. The front-drive RX comes in at $37,625, including $825 destination. The all-wheel-drive 2010 RX 350 costs $39,025. This is actually a $900 price reduction from the 2009 Lexus RX 350, which cost $38,525 in front-drive form and $39,925 with AWD.
Whether or not the price drop is a response to current unfavorable market conditions is anybody's guess, but after driving the 2010 Lexus RX 350, we can tell you that it is better than the 2009 RX 350.
A 275-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and six-speed automatic transmission is standard in every 2010 RX 350. A new double-wishbone rear suspension and electric power steering system give it better manners around turns. On the technology front, the adoption of the mouse-operated Remote Touch navigation system is the biggest news.

Ever since Honda announced that it was canceling its revival of the Acura NSX, product forecasters have been watching to see if the Lexus LF-A would suffer the same fate.
Not so says a source in Japan. The LF-A is still on track and should arrive in the first half of 2010 with a price around $340,000.
The continued existence of the LF-A program has been helped along by the fact that Akido Toyoda, Executive Vice President and grandson of Toyota's founder, has pushed for its development. Toyoda is expected to take over as President of Toyota this spring.

#DAS09 You can read all sorts of serious and informed observations on the 2010 Lexus HS 250h in our full story.
The HS doesn't photograph all that well, but at the press conference today in Cobo's Riverview Ballroom, it looked far more like the sporty Lexus IS than expected. Well, aside from the fact that it is much taller and narrower.
And aside from the fact that it's front-wheel drive. Mark Templin, Lexus group vice president, told us the 2010 HS 250h is built on Toyota's global small-car platform and that its closest relative is the European-market Toyota Avensis. The HS has the same 106.3-inch wheelbase as the Prius, so it's all in the family, you know. The HS 250h does differ by its double-wishbone rear suspension, but we're guessing this has more to do with opening up trunk space than anything else.
Templin also tells us that Lexus hopes to sell 30,000 HS 250h sedans in a full 12-month calendar year. Since the car doesn't go on sale until late summer of this year, you can probably cut that in half for 2009. -- Erin Riches, Senior Editor

You've probably seen it a hundred times in the last year. Some talking head on TV saying that if automakers only made more fuel efficient cars, the public would buy them. Really? The 2008 sales numbers are in, and the draw of fuel efficiency doesn't seem to be holding up in the face of lower gas prices.
Our own Green Car Advisor, John O'Dell, looked through the final sales numbers for hybrids in 2008 and it was clear that their green sheen had definitely worn thin.

Well, no one was really expecting a huge showing from the Big Three, but it's the absence of several of the Asian automakers that will really make this year's show seem slow. With nothing from Acura, Hyundai, Infiniti, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan or Suzuki, the show schedule is a little light. Much of the void will be sucked up by some major debuts by Honda and Toyota along with a few interesting additions from Kia and Subaru for good measure.

No doubt inspired by the Lexus self-parking feature, Lincoln MKS and MKT models will offer their own version, called Active Park Assist.
The system uses ultrasonic sensors mounted on the outside corners of of the vehicles and combines them with a new electric power assisted steering setup. Active Park Assist can then manipulate the steering automatically as the sensors detect where the vehicle is relative to other vehicles. The sensors detect the distance between cars to determine if there is enough space, and then it manipulates the steering, as well as instructing the driver as to when to shift into Drive or Reverse as well as press the gas or brake.
...And, of course, Lincoln says their system is better than the Lexus version.

This past year Chrysler, in what was considered a real coup, snatched two big-time auto executives, one from Lexus and the other from GM. Now, less than a year later, they are gone or are about to be gone.
Deborah Meyer had been VP of marketing for Lexus, and came to Chrysler LLC as their new chief marketing officer. Phil Murtaugh was one of the key players at GM in turning their China operations into such a success. He was to do the same for Chrysler, that being to jump-start their China relationship with Chery. Well, the Dodge/Chery deal went up in smoke thanks to the global financial fiasco. Now Murtaugh too is going up in smoke, as he will depart before next year begins. Same with Meyer, as she too "has left the building."
Not a good sign for Chrysler; wonder how long Jim Press, formerly of Toyota, will hang around?

Lexus will debut their first purpose-built hybrid at the NAIAS, the HS 250h. It's believed that this luxury hybrid, like other Lexus models, is to be spun off an existing Toyota platform; that being the next-gen Toyota Prius--also to be unveiled at Detroit.

November 19, 2008
Sometime in the spring of 2009, the beloved Lexus RX 400h will become the 2010 Lexus RX 450h. Like the 2010 RX 350, the hybrid RX is redesigned (though the basic platform architecture carries over).
Key to its new name is the installation of Toyota's 3.5-liter V6. As this is a hybrid application, the V6 is running on the Atkinson cycle (whereby the intake valves remain open during part of the compression stroke). The cumulative output of the 3.5-liter V6 and the RX's front-drive electric motor is 295 horsepower -- up from 268 on the RX 400h.
However, the hybrid RX has put on some weight, so it probably won't be any quicker than its predecessor. "We prioritized mpg, so we didn't push for a much lower 0-60-mph time," said Ben Mitchell, a product planner for the Lexus RX.
Fuel economy is up by 8 percent, says Lexus. Considering that the 2009 RX 400h has a combined EPA rating of 25.1 mpg, that translates to 27.1 mpg.
Otherwise, the news on the 2010 Lexus RX 450h is in-cabin technology. In addition to the new hard-drive-based navigation system with Remote Touch controller, the RX picks up nav traffic, nav weather, iPod integration and a sideview monitor. Of course, Mark Levinson is still around, too. The airbag count is up to 10, as both the driver and front passenger now get knee bags.

The big story about the 2010 Lexus RX 350 is that there's nothing big about it. Due to its wider track, it's slightly broader across the shoulders than the 2009 RX 350, but otherwise it has the same overall footprint. Its 107.9-inch wheelbase is only an inch longer than before, but there's still no third-row seat. RX owners, we're told, still don't want one.
"Keeping the right size was something we heard a lot of, because we certainly studied whether we wanted to add a third row," Ben Mitchell, an RX product planner, told us. "The majority of RX owners prioritize space in back, room for luggage."
To that end, the 2010 RX 350 has a more compact double-wishbone rear suspension, and after inspecting the cargo bay, we can attest that it intrudes less than the previous strut arrangement.
The previous RX's 3.5-liter V6 carries over but makes 275 horsepower this year (an increase of 5), and last year's five-speed automatic gives way to Toyota's six-speed unit with a manual-shift mode. The RX 350 gained some weight in the redesign (same basic platform architecture but more luxury gadgets), but we're told 0-60 times won't be affected much.
Electric power steering assist is new this year, but based on our recent experience with the Toyota Venza, we don't think this is a bad thing for the RX. "Owners asked for a little bit tighter response in the steering," said Mitchell, and we think we've delivered that without compromising comfort."
Probably the biggest change on the 2010 Lexus RX 350 is that it no longer has a touchscreen-style navigation system. Really. You now have to use a console controller called Remote Touch. We're told you can adjust the controller's sensitivity much like a computer mouse. To ease the transition, Lexus has a couple hands-on tutorials set up in the convention center that you can play with if you go to the show.
The 2010 Lexus RX 350 goes on sale in February 2009.

An image from the brochure of the next-gen Lexus RX CUV has made its way up on to the Net. The car will officially debut at the LA auto show shortly. It's expected that the car will retain the 3.5L V6, but may get a power bump to around 280 hp. There is also a possibility that the new RX may be offered with seven-passenger seating. The car should hit showrooms in the first quarter of next year.

The hardtop-convertible battle is going to heat up shortly, as the American and European luxury carmakers will shortly also have Lexus and Infiniti to contend with. Actually the new Infiniti G37 convertible (2008 Los Angeles Auto Show: Infiniti G37 Convertible) and the Lexus IS 250/350 (2008 Paris Auto Show: 2010 Lexus IS 250/350C) will likely do battle among themselves first, with the other entries being secondary targets. Even so, that's not good news for BMW, Saab, etc.
Both these new hard-droptops will go on sale this spring.
Also of note is that
Infiniti will be offering
AWD on their 2009 fixed-roof G37 coupe (
Infiniti Adds All-Wheel-Drive Coupe to 2009 G37 Lineup), thereby making it a
G37x coupe. Also interesting to note that 40 percent of all G37 sedan buyers opt for AWD, and Infiniti is expecting the percentage for the AWD coupe will be between 30 and 40 percent of their total coupe sales.

The question isn't why, but rather why did it take so long to come to this decision. To me it's a no-brainer. More and more folks want to keep their luxury as they downsize from larger vehicles. The evidence is everywhere. All the premium brands are putting more emphasis on smaller vehicles. Heck, even mainstream automakers are gussying up some of their smaller offerings. The time is now for luxury small cars.
The car will first debut in Europe in 2010, and then likely make its way over here. It will be based on the all-new Prius that will announced this winter, at the Detroit auto show, I believe.

Here's the BMW 3 Series fighter we've been expecting from Lexus for years. Dubbed the 2010 Lexus IS 250C and IS 350C, this new two-door features a three-piece retractable hardtop that folds away in 21 seconds, according to Lexus. The collapsible roof is made entirely of aluminum to save weight and all the seals have been optimized to deliver the same interior noise levels as the IS sedans. There will be no hardtop coupe, so if you were hoping for a two-door IS-F you're out of luck for now.
Compared to the sedans, the IS 250/350C is identical underneath the skin; same engine lineup and same suspension except for a few tweaks to compensate for the added weight of the convertible roof. The doors are 11.8 inches longer and there are 2 additional inches of rear overhang in order to maintain sufficient cargo room in the trunk -- two golf bags' worth with the top up, according to Lexus. A revised gauge cluster is said to be easier to read in bright sunlight, while the climate control and audio systems are both speed-sensitive to compensate for top-down driving.
It's classic Lexus in terms of precise execution, but the result is an awkward mess of conflicting lines and odd proportions. The A-pillars are too short compared to the long nose, and the rear end appears abnormally high and bulky. Put it next to a 3 Series convertible and the Lexus would look even more thrown together. You'll be able to judge for yourself next year as the IS 250/350C is scheduled to go on sale late next spring. -- Ed Hellwig, Lead Senior Editor, Inside Line

AWD is already part of the package on the top-of-the-line LS 600h. Now Lexus will offer AWD on the less expensive LS 460. The AWD's default front/rear power split is 40/60 but can change to 30/70 depending on driving conditions. The engine puts out 381 hp, and that power is sent to the wheels via an 8-speed transmission. This is unlike the AWD LS 600h, which uses an electronically-controled CVT. The car should go on sale at the end of the year in Russia, and probably here too.

For 2009 Toyota is giving the RAV4 its mid-cycle refreshening. The CUV gets some minor front and rear fascia changes. Probably most interesting is that there is a new Sport Appearance Package for the AWD V6 model that includes run-flat tires--which means no spare tire hanging off the rear door (or spare tire period). This model still has a door, and not a hatch; much like what's seen on the Lexus GX470.
Also newsworthy is the base 4-cylinder engine is all new, and now displaces 2.5 liters. It puts out 179 hp/172 lb.-ft. of torque, vs 166 hp/165 lb.-ft. of torque of the old 2.4 liter engine.

Inside Line has learned that the next-generation Lexus SC430 and Toyota Avalon have been canceled. Sales on the SC430 are down 40 percent so far this year; and since Lexus is developing a production version of the LF-A super coupe, what's the point of keeping the SC430?
As to the Avalon, word is that Toyota may be developing a long-wheelbase version of the 2012 Camry. If that's the case there would be no need for the Avalon, it would certainly be cheaper for Toyota to offer a stretched Camry than a significantly different Avalon, which is based on the Camry anyway.

Audi will be joining BMW in using the ZF 8-speed automatic transmission on their top-of-the-line models. This is in an effort to match Lexus, which already is using an 8-speed automatic on their LS460. BMW had earlier announced that the 7-Series and X6 models would be getting this new ZF tranny, and now Audi too will use it on their A8, Q7, and the upcoming A7 four-door coupe. The 8-speed Audis are expected next year...

In talking with Mike Levine of PickupTruck.com yesterday about the F-150 diesel, some interesting tidbits—actually nothing more than rumors at this point—came to light about Toyota's upcoming diesel plans.
As I'm sure you're aware, Toyota recently introduced a new DOHC 4V 4.5L V8 twin-turbo diesel in Australia in the Land Cruiser 200 (here). Well that engine, or a variation of it, is coming here. That's not a surprise...

Audi chose the 2008 Beijing Auto Show to debut their new Q5 crossover, further signifying how important the Chinese market is becoming. The Q5, which will be pitted against the BMW X3, Infiniti EX35, and Lexus RX350, will come with Audi's 3.2L V6, a 6-speed automatic, and AWD when it comes Stateside in 2009.

As most of you know Inside Line also conducts long-term tests on vehicles that they purchase. Usually the vehicles are kept for one year, but in this case, because it's a hybrid and they wanted to get a true long-term evaluation of how it is, they've kept the vehicle for two years.
The results are disappointing, to say the least. Oh, the car performed okay, but the gas mileage over two years (30,000 miles) is not nearly what Lexus claimed for the RX400h...

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again: Flat black paint makes just about anything look a little tougher. Take this 2008 Lexus IS-F for instance. It was built by Five Axis and although it’s far less shiny that the IS-F that participated in our recent comparison test, we like the looks of this one much better. Part of the credit goes to its wide body conversion kit and the 20 inch wheels, but it’s the Satin Black Pearl paint that really makes it...

In news that fans of domestic car brands have felt that is long overdue, Toyota is no longer the darling over at CR. The car and truck maker no longer will get an assumed "Recommended" rating for new products, as the Camry V6, Tundra V8 4WD and Lexus GS AWD have been tagged with reliability issues in CR's 2007 Annual Car Reliability Survey.
This is big news folks, and is a real blow to the image of Toyota and Lexus as brands that can do no wrong. You can bet there are lot of hands clapping in Detroit and other automotive headquarters worldwidebut especially in Detroit...

Good news for Japanese auto dealers here in North America, as early reports indicate that the massive earthquake earlier this week in Japan won't disrupt deliveries here.

"I don't see a massive impact from this, and if anything it's likely to have a bigger effect on products for the domestic Japanese market," said analyst Catherine Madden, who studies automakers' production plans for Global Insight Inc. in Lexington, Massachusetts...

The folks over at Jalopnik seem to think it's the '08 Pathfinder. If it is the Pathfinder, it's worth noting that they've ditched the goofy rear door handle for a more conventional unit. The 6-lug wheel suggests that it's indeed an "SUV," and not just another CUV...

Good news for both customers and Toyota/Lexus, as the corporation "bit the bullet" and accepted responsibility for the infamous sludge issue. It's good news for consumers in that they've won this battle. Two years ago in Detroit, also in the Riverview Ballroom, Lexus announced its intent to build a supercar with the unveiling of the LF-A, a front mid-engine, rear-drive car with a sub-5.0L V10 engine. Two years on, we're seeing the car again with styling updates and air management enhancements, based on the company's testing at Toyota's Higashi Fuji Technical Center and on track at Fuji Speedway. Don't get too excited: Despite the "F" badge on the LF-A's front fender (signifying the brand's new performance division), this is still a concept made of fiberglass.

Key differences from the original include reshaped headlights and air inlets (both in the front fascia and just ahead of the rear wheels).

Lexus has finally confirmed what we've suspected for months. The high performance 2008 IS-F sedan will in fact make its debut at the Detroit auto show in January, and judging from our recent spy video it will be a formidable foe to BMW's upcoming M3. Lexus didn't reveal any details other than to say it would have V8 power like the BMW, but a teaser photo does reveal that the IS-F will retain the unique stacked tailpipes seen on the prototypes.
This news of Lexus offering a true high-performance model lineup as had me (and I'm sure others too) thinking as to what we might see here. One of those pondering this new hyper-Lexus lineup is Peter DeLorenzo of Autoextremist.com, who has weighed in his typical "high-octane" fashion. As per many (note: "many," not "all") of DeLorenso rants, he's made some very good points. Lexus decision-makers involved in this project should take note...

Carter went on to say that the new LS600hL was designed to be the ultimate Lexus statement in performance and technology, that it is the most technology-advanced vehicle in the world. It was built to satisfy discerning customers, and to reach the outer limits of style and performance.

For anyone interested on how Lexus made it to the top, this looks to be an interesting and worthwhile read.
Chris Denove and James D. Power IV, son of the founder of J.D. Power and Associates, wrote a book: Satisfaction: How Every Great Company Listens to the Voice of the Customer, which details how Lexus established itself as a leader in customer satisfaction among car buyers...

The Lexus LF-A supercar has been secretly approved for production. The car reportedly will debut in 2008.
The concept version was shown with a 5.0L V10. It will be really interesting to see how this will compete against the Acura NSX replacement, which is due in 2009...

I know when towing with a Ford escape hybrid, the factory tow rating is reduced from 3,500 pounds to 1,000 pounds. I found that out while attending a Ford Escape event at DC's FedEx field last year. Needless to say, the Escape hybrid is not a vehicle I would want to tow with, even small trailers.
That experience lead me to wonder as to what other hybrids could tow...

While everyone (well, most everyone) here in the USA thinks very highly of the Lexus brand, in Japan it's another story.
Lexus set up shop in Japan last August, to do battle with the upscale Euro-brands, and so far the "battle" has been pretty much a no-show.
"The start of Lexus in Japan was somewhat slower than we had expected," Takeshi Suzuki, senior managing director at Toyota, conceded at Toyota's third-quarter results announcement in Tokyo on Feb. 7...

If you buy a Lexus ES, you buy it because you want most luxury possible at the $35,000 mark and couldn't care less about performance, right?
Well, says Paul Williamsen, Toyota product education manager, the new ES will offer "a real level of luxury but with a driving experience that doesn't disappoint." Important to this mission is a new 272-hp 3.5L V6 and six-speed automatic that get the car to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, according to Lexus. The ES doesn't ride on an all-new platform, but Lexus says it has been substantially modified to match the engine's capability.
"There were some in the past who might have recognized the ES as a Lexus, as an entry-luxury car, but might have found its reputation to not be a high enough level of dynamic driving experience," Williamsen added. "With this car, we'll add a new level of consideration among those buyers."
Should you give yourself over to these considering masses?..

Is this going to be the next "big thing?" Reclining rear seats with foot rests? It first showed up on the mega-buck Maybach 62 limo. At the Detroit car show the upcoming Lexus LS460 had this feature, and here it is on a JDM-spec Mazda MPV.
I bet it won't be long before we see this on US-spec minivans or SUVs...

The new Lexus LS 460 is just one of those cars that sort of grows on you over time, but in a good way. Oh they are still struggling in developing a "Lexus Look," but they're getting there, slowly but surely...
What I'm talking about here is the inner beauty; the undertheskinstuff. Where else this side of a Freightliner are you going to find an 8-speed transmission?..

At this afternoon's press conference, Jim Press of Toyota got some chuckles, and some gasps, as he recounted the voluminous list of features on the next-generation Lexus LS flagship sedan.
The transmission is an 8-speed automatic (gasps). The audio system has hard-disc storage for 4000 songs (oos and ahs). The climate control monitors not only interior temperature, but also body temperature of occupants (chuckles, when Jim said, "I've been afraid to ask where that sensor goes)...

The
three major Japanese automakers, Toyota, Honda and Nissan have been
selling premium cars here in North America for some time under separate
banners from the mainstream brethren.
This link
specifically refers to Acura's plans for Japan, but the both Lexus and
Infiniti are also mentioned. Lexus is already being in Europe and
other markets, and Infinities are sold in the Middle East. I bet it
won't be long before all the Japanese premium brands are sold worldwide...
