A Streetcar Named Stella: We drive Subaru's Electric Car

Stella f34 555.jpg

Our man in Japan, Peter Lyon, has driven the newest eco-mobile, the Subaru Stella Plug-In electro-box.

The profoundly unsexy Stella Plug-In uses the body of the standard Japanese-market Stella,  (which is typically powered by a 660 cc gas engine) and the 63-hp electric motor and lithium-ion battery from the company's R1e development vehicle. For perspective, the hot-rodded Stella RS, with its tiny supercharged motor makes the same 63 horsepower.

Range and the time needed to re-fuel don't quite match the performance of the gas version though. The vehicle will go on sale to the general public (the general Japanese public, that is) in  April 2010 for the equivalent of $47,900...wait...what? Well, after various national and regional government rebates, the Stella Plug-In will still be a not-insubstantial $29,000.

Kind of puts GM's Volt pricing struggles into perspective, no?

Read Inside Line's first drive report on the Subaru Stella Plug-In.

Best Used Performance Cars for Less Than $10,000

vwgti-555.jpg

Writing about the best used performance cars for $5,000 was a challenge. At that price point, you're either going to get lucky and find a gem, or get unlucky and end up shelling out another $5,000 to keep a basket case running.

So with that in mind, we decided to bump the price floor to $10K to start and see what we could find. The talent pool is much deeper for sure, although the possibility of a clunker is still there if you're not careful.

So take a look at our list and see what you think. Anything we missed?

Ken Block Readying New Drift Video Featuring 560-HP WRX

Block-slide-2.jpg

Ken Block is a rally car driver, skateboarder, snowboarder and - let's not forget -- shrewd business man. The current Subaru Rally Team USA driver and co-founder of DC shoes, last year turned a day of sliding his gymkhana car around a California airbase into one of the most popular automotive internet videos of all time .

How do you top that? You go bigger of course. Higher production values. Better location. And, naturally, a new, faster and more powerful car. And if you're Ken Block you make the whole thing an informercial to promote DC's latest clothing collection - like we said, he's shrewd.

Has the 2010 Subaru Legacy Moved Into German Territory?

subaru-555.jpg

According to correspondent Peter Lyon, the all-new 2010 Subaru Legacy is a legitimate rival to the Audi A4 and BMW 3 Series. Strong words from our man in Japan, but he swears that the Subaru team was intent on building a true luxury sport sedan this time around. See if you agree after reading our exclusive first drive of the latest Legacy.

Latest Info on the Toyota/Subaru Coupe

bestcar-555.jpg
Photo: Best Car

The Toyota/Subaru coupe kerfuffle continues. This time a report in the Japanese magazine Best Car says two very different prototypes have been spotted testing. Both ride on the platform used for the new Subaru Legacy, but Best Car didn't speculate on the styling of either coupe.

The magazine claims to know the exterior dimensions, however, pinning the length at 165.4-inches, the width at 68.9-inches and the height at 51.2-inches. Those numbers would make it considerably smaller than the Hyundai Genesis Coupe in every dimension. That said, Best Car still claims that both of the coupes will have rear seats, although it does describe them as "emergency"seats, so they will be small indeed.

Happy Great Friday: Ken Block's Subaru Gymkhana Outtakes

2009 New York Auto Show: 2010 Subaru Legacy GT and 2.5i

legacygtf34.jpg#NYIAS An unassuming gray 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5i was on stage for Subaru's press conference today in New York, but a short while later a red Legacy GT found its way into the booth. For full details on the bigger, sedan-only 2010 Legacy, check our full story.

Like the 2010 Outback, the 2010 Legacy should go on sale in August. It's rumored to start around $20,000 and we've been told it will definitely beat the 2009 Legacy's $20,795 base price.

Preliminary fuel economy estimates are 22 mpg city/29 mpg highway for a Legacy 2.5i (which has the 170-hp, 2.5-liter boxer-4) with the new six-speed manual gearbox driving all four wheels through the standard all-wheel-drive system. Choose the CVT and that goes up to 23/30.

Impressive figures for an AWD midsize sedan, but we'd rather have the Legacy GT, which has a 265-hp turbocharged boxer-4 and the six-speed gearbox. But it's only going to get 17/23. Same goes for the 256-hp, 3.6-liter H6 in the Legacy 3.6R (not shown today at Subaru's stand), which has a five-speed automatic only.

One other tidbit: There's no SI-Drive in U.S.-spec 2010 Legacy GTs, though the feature will carry on in Japanese- and European-market Legacys. "We felt it was important to simplify the car to make it more acceptable to more people," Dave Sullivan, product manager for the Legacy, Outback and Tribeca, told us.

2009 New York Auto Show: 2010 Subaru Outback

outbackf34.jpg#NYIAS Scheduled to go on sale in August, the 2010 Subaru Outback follows the lead of the 2010 Subaru Legacy and is much larger than any previous Outback. With the 2010 Legacy rumored to start around $20,000, look for Subaru's all-terrain wagon (and it will only be a wagon this time) to start a couple grand above that.

The turbo engine option is gone, so your choices consist of the 2.5-liter, normally aspirated boxer four-cylinder (170 horsepower at 5,600 rpm, 170 pound-feet at 4,000 rpm) and the Tribeca's 3.6-liter H6 (256 hp at 6,000 rpm, 247 lb-ft at 4,400 rpm).

All-wheel drive is standard, of course. Preliminary fuel economy estimates are 19 mpg city/ 27 mpg highway with the base four and the new six-speed manual transmission and 21/27 with the new "Lineartronic" continuously variable transmission. The CVT is manufactured in-house, but Subaru sources the chain from Luk, a German manufacturer that supplies Audi's CVT.

Unfortunately, Subaru won't be putting the six-speed manual and CVT into the Impreza and Forester for 2010. Company officials tell us the switch might not come until those models get full redesigns.

With the H6 engine and the carry-over five-speed automatic, you're looking at a predicted 17/23 rating.

More details after the jump.

Fast & Furious: Every Car, Every Truck in Detail

camaro-950.jpg

The Fast and the Furious series is admittedly light on plot lines and believable acting, so it's up to the cars to carry it along. From turbocharged imports to blown American muscle cars, it's an ever-changing mix that makes up for all the cheesy one liners and Vin Diesel close ups.

The latest installment is called simply Fast & Furious and contributor John Pearley Huffman went behind the scenes to chronicle nearly every noteworthy car and truck features in the movie. Could this be the best F & F lineup ever? Maybe. Will it make for a good movie? Uh, maybe.

2009 Detroit Auto Show: Legacy Concept Will Go Into Production This Summer

2010-subaru-legacy-555.jpg

#DAS09 Executives from Subaru told Inside Line that the Subaru Legacy Concept that debuted today at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show will go into production later this year as the 2010 Subaru Legacy. They said to expect few changes from what we saw on the show stand. We'll try to dig up more details, but expect to see the next-generation Legacy in dealers by the fall. -- Ed Hellwig, Senior Editor, Inside Line

2009 Detroit Auto Show: Subaru Legacy Concept

subaru-legacy-555.jpg

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of its Legacy sedan this year, Subaru offered a glimpse of the car's future with the new Legacy Concept.

Like the Honda Accord and Mazda 6, the next Legacy is going to be considerably larger than the current model. The concept rides on a 108.3-inch wheelbase, stretched from 105.1 inches. It has also grown approximately 3 inches in overall length, width and height.

Designed as a four-passenger sedan, the Legacy Concept uses Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel-Drive system mated to a 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine.

This Subaru has officially moved from funky to chunky. -- Kelly Toepke, News Editor

2009 Detroit Auto Show Preview: The Asian Automakers

naias-555.jpg

Well, no one was really expecting a huge showing from the Big Three, but it's the absence of several of the Asian automakers that will really make this year's show seem slow. With nothing from Acura, Hyundai, Infiniti, Mazda, Mitsubishi, Nissan or Suzuki, the show schedule is a little light. Much of the void will be sucked up by some major debuts by Honda and Toyota along with a few interesting additions from Kia and Subaru for good measure.

Suzuki president worried about failout from Detroit auto meltdown

Osamu Suzuki 120.jpg

Osamu Suzuki, president of Suzuki Motors, is quite worried as to what the Detroit domino effect may have on the smaller Japanese brands.

His feeling is that it could result in fewer Japanese car manufacturers. Smaller brands like Suzuki, Subaru, Mitsubishi, Mazda and Isuzu could be impacted in a way in which they may not survive; at least as we currently know them, or at all.

Says Suzuki: "There is a time-lag between what is happening with the Big Three US carmakers and the impact that will have in Japan. It is as if tsunami waves are rolling toward Japanese shores. I believe a real wave will hit us around July or August next year, with car sales hitting rock bottom."

He went on to say that the world was "entering a period in which more than ten Japanese carmakers could be consolidated into a Japan Big Three."

Subaru UK puts the brakes on Impreza diesel importation

Impreza diesel 210.jpg

Thanks to the poor exchange rate of the strengthening yen, the UK importer of Subaru has put the importation of the new Impreza diesel on hold.

"At the current rate we would have to charge vastly more than we can justify for the diesel Impreza if we were to make a profit. As a result we can't guarantee when the car will go on sale as we can't predict when the economy will change."

The situation with the yen is causing problems with other Japanese automakers as well. In fact Straightline just reported that Honda may be forced to more some of their operations out of Japan if things don't change. (Might Honda's headquarters leave Japan?).

More on the Subaru WRC withdrawal

subaruworldrally.555.jpg

Here's an interesting link which speaks to the sudden Subaru withdrawal from the WRC. There is an interview (that's been translated) with a representative from FHI regarding this matter. From what's stated, this move came very quickly and with great surprise.

2010 Detroit Auto Show Preview: 2010 Subaru Legacy Concept

subaru_legacy_2010concept-designreview555.jpg

Here you go Subie fans: an image of the Legacy concept has surfaced over at DrivingSports.com (and on other sites as well). This is very close to what the actual 2010 Legacy will look like. Under the hood resides a 3.6 H6. Since the image shows no hood scoop there's no turbo; a turbo is expected to be part of the model mix, but most likely in 4-cylinder format. The car will debut at the NAIAS next month.

Future Subarus to go on a diet

logo_subaru_horiz_200x113.jpg

Flyinpig, the NASIOC resident Japanese translator and Subie news guru par excellence, has dug some interesting stuff regarding Subarus that will show up in 2012-15 time slot.

By 2012 they're expected to lose 10 percent of their current weight. By 2015 the weight should be down by about 15 percent. This is all due to a greater use of high-tensile steel, as well as the increased usage of resin parts. This is all in an effort to increase fuel mileage.

So that means, in comparing the weight of the current STI:

2009 STI = 3395 lbs

2012 STI = 3055 lbs ??

2015 STI = 2885 lbs ???

Porsche, Honda (motorcycles), Suzuki (cars) and Subaru cut racing teams

Hondabike-Suzukicar racing555.jpg

More racing teams are to be cut, thanks to the global economic fiasco. Suzuki has just announced that they're pulling out of the WRC (here).

Here's Inside Line's take: Suzuki Getting Out of FIA World Rally Championship

A little over a week ago Honda announced that they were dropping their F1 team (Audi and Honda drop racing teams), and now they have announced that they are also pulling out of AMA road racing with their bikes (here). With the bikes there is a sub-plot in that there are a lot of bike teams upset with the new AMA road-racing governing body (Daytona Motorsports Group), so I guess this financial mess was the last straw.

Porsche and Subaru too!

After the announcement of Audi pulling out of the American Le Mans Series, we now have learned that Porsche too is pulling out of this racing venue (here).

porscheleavingalms555.jpg

Subaru is leaving the WRC as well (here). This is a company that has spent 20 years in the WRC!. At least SOA is continuing with their effort in the American Rally series. Wow, talk about a collapse of the racing industry.

2009 Detroit Auto Show Preview: Subaru to show concept vehicle

logo_subaru_horiz_200x113.jpg

Well, this is good news. Subaru, unlike many other automakers, is not bailing from the 2009 NAIAS. In fact they will have a new concept to be displayed.

My guess is that it will be a close-to-production--much like several recent Honda and Acura concepts (Pilot, Ridgeline, TL, etc.)--2010 Legacy or Outback. The last time these models were introduced, back in 2004, the Legacy was introduced first at Detroit with the Outback being announced a month later at Chicago. I suspect that will be the case again this time.

All-new 2010 Subaru Legacy to get a CVT

logo_subaru_horiz_200x113.jpg

This had been long rumored, and it now appears to be true. Expect better fuel mileage and a higher torque capacity than what is available with the current Subie automatics.

I'm happy to hear about both these improvements. The main reason that the new Subaru diesel only comes with a manual is because they currently don't have an automatic that can handle the torque of that engine; and if they want to sell it here in great numbers, an automatic has to be part of the plan. So this is good news indeed.

This new CVT will first appear in the Legacy (and Outback), and then will trickle down into the Forester and Impreza lineups. Hope to see something at one of the upcoming auto shows.

GM-Subaru-Saab...again?

No, GM is not buying into Subaru (again). But there is an interesting story found over on Jalopnik (here) via TurboNines.com (here) and TrollhattanSaab.com (here), about GM filing patents for a Tribeca-based Saab 9-6X.

Huh? GM-Saab divorced themselves from Subaru several years ago. What's going on here?

Subaru-Toyota coupe may be branded a Scion

toyota_subaru_joint_sports_main_260jpg.jpg

Latest rumor to hit the Net is that the joint-effort Subaru-Toyota sport coupe may be sold as a Scion. At least, that may be the case here in North America. In other markets, where there is no Scion brand one can only assume it will be branded a Toyota.

And, of course, there will be a version sold in most markets as a Subaru. I say most markets, as Subaru of Australia has stated they have no interest in this car. Why, you ask? It's RWD, and the Aussies (like myself, and perhaps other markets as well?) believe that RWD runs counter to Subaru's AWD brand image.

2008 SEMA: Subaru WRX Concept

2009_subaru_impreza_wrx_spt_sema_concept555.jpg

You just know that Subaru would be out in full force at SEMA. One of the vehicles they have on display is a WRX concept, with only a few mods; one of which is their SPT cat-back exhaust.

What's interesting here is that Subaru is saying this concept car has 275 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. Now before I bought my new trick-or-treat WRX (got it on Halloween), I drove an '09 WRX with the cat-back exhaust. Besides having a jail-bait sound, the car felt a bit quicker than the earlier '09 WRX that I drove without said exhaust system. So... I guess that exhaust does add some extra power.

2008 SEMA Show: Subaru Forester XTI Concept

xtirear34.jpgStraightline Blogger in Chief Bob Holland mentioned the Subaru Forester XTI concept last week, and though these washed-out photos taken under harsh Vegas Convention Center lighting don't do it justice, it's a pretty cool car in person.

Its entirely a Subaru of America project, hence the XTI bit of its name, which distances it from previous Japanese-spec Forester STIs. It's not even a certainty that an STI version of the 3rd-generation Forester will be offered in Japan.

Still, one engineer told me, "This Forester thinks it's a WRX STI" -- right down to the calibration of its SI-Drive and VDC systems. We're told it's only 60 pounds heavier than a real STI.

Essentially, a 3rd-gen Forester body was dropped down onto an STI engine, transmission, struts and control arms -- so the whole front clip. Various suspension bits had to be repositioned here and there, and Subaru did add an adjustable coil-over kit that's obviously not included on a stock STI. With all these changes, the Forester XTI concept rides 5 inches lower than a stock Forester XT.

For packaging reasons, the Forester XT's cold air intake is used here, however. Also, a custom-fabricated cat-back exhaust butches up the soundtrack (so we're told), while liberating 10 extra horsepower (now 315) and 10 more pound-feet of torque (now 300). And for cosmetic, SEMA-related reasons, the 18-inch wheels are borrowed from the JDM Legacy S402.

Have a look in the front seat of the Forester XTI concept, though, and you'd swear you were staring into an STI cockpit.

Classic micro cars in the news

Subie 360.JPG

While most of us reading these blogs are into big horsepower, there's a small but very devoted group who get their jollies from little cars--as in really little cars. Yep, there's a micro car fetish out there, and there's nothing perverse or weird (okay, maybe a bit weird) about it.

MPH Specialties of Portland Oregon is one such shop. Mark Hatten, the owner, has one neat Subie 360 that's sporting a street rod flame paint job. In addition to old Subies, Hatten works on Messerschmitt KR 200s, Honda 600s, Ramblers, and other rare small cars.

Hard to believe that this tiny 360cc Subie eventually evolved into the barnstorming STI...

The WRX is dead. Long live the WRX!

100_0171_555.jpg

Those following this blog know that I was in a pretty nasty 5-car mishap about month ago (End of a WRX?). I was rear-ended by a 25-year-old driving his mom's Volvo. My '06 WRX was totaled. Another car, a Kia that was an Enterprise rental was also totaled. A Lexus RX received $15,000 damage; not sure about the other cars in terms of damage. Fortunately there were no serious injuries, just a few bumps and bruises by many involved, myself included.

That's the bad news. The good news is that Allstate awarded me almost $22K to put towards a replacement.

And what a replacement it is! It's a new '09 Subaru 5-door WRX Premium Package (w/o NAVI) in dark gray! Hey, whaddya expect, me being a Subie guy? It's essentionally the same car I had, just new.

So far the first 40 miles have been great. It's certainly a lot more refined than my old ride--and that gray-on-gray wheel and body color combo sure looks sharp. Can't wait till the break-in period is over so I can let the engine sing past 4000 rpm.

2009 Subaru Impreza 2.5 GT

Impreza 2.5 GT 260.jpg

Autoblog has a new '09 Impreza 2.5 GT as part of their test fleet. As those who follow Subaru closely know (me!), this is merely last year's WRX Premium Package automatic, but with a few tweaks. Compared to the '08 WRX automatic, this new Impreza 2.5 GT gets a moonroof; some other color choices; the grille is from the Outback Sport; and different front seats without integrated headrests, unlike the WRX.

Also new is that Subaru has decided that this model needed some serious (market) attention, hence the name change and equipment upgrades. And apparently "attention" it's getting, as this is the first time I can ever remember that a turbo-powered Impreza--with an automatic transmission--has ever been tested by the media. That's right, as every WRX I've ever seen tested were of the 3-pedal variety. So, change the name, and it gets tested; ah, marketing at its best!

...And guess what? Autoblog likes the car! Imagine that, an automatic WRX, er... 2.5 GT that is, getting a positive review! What's next? A black president?

The little town of Itasca, IL has a new police cruiser in their fleet, and it's not your everyday Crown Vic or Dodge Charger. Nope, it's none other than a Subie STI.

Unfortunately it will not be used to run down the bad guys, but rather will be used as a PR tool to appeal to young drivers at various police-youth events. Now if this police department is smart, come winter time they'll swap out those super-sticky summer tires for a good set of winter treads, and really show those Crown Vic and Charger police jockeys what winter driving can really be like!

This is not the first time that a hot Subaru has been used in this manner, or for normal police duty. In fact, in many other countries, Subaru WRXs are used by the police as their vehicle of choice, and have been for years (here).

Subaru DEX

Subaru DEX 555.jpg

The new Subaru DEX will go on sale in Japan next month. Think of it as badge-engineering at its best (or worst, depending on your perspective), as it is merely a Scion bB/Daihatsu COO with a Subaru Stella grille. Also, to the best of my knowledge, this is the FWD-only Subaru being offered.

Track Day: Drive at your own risk?

Track day 555.jpg

As the so called "Track Day" has become increasing more popular, many insurance companies are taking a second look at these events, and as to whether to insure drivers who participate in them.

Also--asking insurers to clarify coverage could result in a nasty surprise. Mike Barr, a dentist from Palm Beach, Fla., called the insurer USAA to see if his policy covered his Subaru WRX STi on the track.

"Some months later I got a letter from USAA saying they were going to discontinue coverage," he said." "They dropped me because I asked about" performance driving schools. "They confirmed it verbally when I called to inquire further." A USAA spokesman said Dr. Barr was canceled for "several reasons," but would not elaborate.

Toyota-Subaru coupe details emerge

Subie:ToyotaCoupe 555.jpg

Some more details of the RWD Toyota-Subaru coupe have been revealed. One being there won't be a turbo WRX or STI version, but rather it will have a 2.0 naturally aspirated boxer four, puting out around 200 hp, and using a 6-speed tranny with an automatic to follow. It will be a 2-seater, and will be priced under £20,000.

The Autocar article (here) mentions the Miata several times as a possible competitor, or at least as a vehicle this new car could go up against in the marketplace. Does that mean a drop-top version may also be in the works?

Subaru hires new design head--again

WRX 260.jpg

Okay, that's all we know, and it's noted in the last paragraph of this article.

More important, this is an interesting commentary on the "State of Subaru;" where it's been, and why it's been so difficult for the Subaru brand to break out, and really establish itself as an automotive powerhouse--despite having all the engineering and unique brand DNA ingredients necessary to do so. Being a long-time Subaru fan, I found this to be a very interesting read, and I agree with the writer for the most part.

__________

So why can't Subaru implement strategies to make it what it could be -- a more profitable small-scale car company.

In a word, it's the weight of Subaru's rigid corporate culture. As with many Japanese companies, Subaru has not made the moves needed to shift from the usual obsession with market share to creating value in products that increase profit margins.

__________

Unlike many, I strongly supported the now-abandoned, and admittedly controversial, design language championed by former Subaru design head, Andreas Zapatinas. What they've now done--as the article correctly states--is gone "back to its flavor-of-the-month styling." It's safe. It doesn't offend anybody. It's also boring and is no way going to make Subaru stand out from the crowd. You can swap the logo on the grille of any current Subaru for that of a Kia, Hyundai, or any other nondescript vehicle brand, and few would know the difference. You can't say that about any of the Euro-brands that many of us so covet.

So let's see, once again, if Subaru can come up with a distinctive look that they can call their own--and this time successfully sell it to the masses.

Subaru STI Takumi concept hints at upcoming spec.C

subaru_takumi_concept_555.jpg

The only thing that I can see that's different from the conventional STI is the blacked-out rear wing, small front lip, and the 12-spoke wheels, but it is believed that this STI Takumi concept, under the skin is pure spec.C. That means tweaking on all performance fronts: engine, suspension, etc.

This car was on display at Motorsport Japan 2008. The production spec.C is expected to debut sometime this winter, and will likely have a few more cosmetic changes including a roof scoop and gold wheels. For those not familar with the spec.C, this is the hardcore track-oriented version of the STI. Previous versions were never sold here in the USA.

Subaru sales up 4% year-to-date

logo_subaru_horiz_200x113.jpg

Taking a short coffee break from the Paris auto show coverage, I noticed Subaru sales for the year are up 4 percent. Yeah, like everyone else, they were down in September, but not nearly as bad as the other automakers. Much of the credit for the good overall sales are due to the new Impreza and Forester--especially the Forester. Maybe it's because I'm a Subie fanboy, but I'm seeing a lot of new Foresters on the road lately.

End of a WRX?

WRX_Before and after 555 .jpg

Before and after...

Normally I don't talk about myself here, but I thought everyone might be interested in how I spent my Sunday afternoon.

The weather was clear, and the traffic was moderate to somewhat heavy, at least heavy for a Sunday. I was in the fast lane on I-495, the Washington Beltway, crossing the American Legion Bridge coming from Virginia into Maryland. The traffic was moving at a good clip, not speeding, but moving right along, when suddenly the traffic in front of me stopped. I slammed on my brakes only to be rear-ended, which pushed me into the car ahead.

My car then veered off to the left climbing the jersey barrier, and I thought for sure that I was going to end up going over and having a head-on collision with oncoming traffic. Fortunately the car shot back into my lane, in which I hit the car that I rear-ended again. Then my car shot into the middle and slow lanes hitting one or two other cars. It finally came to a stop about 50 yards ahead of the other wrecked cars, over on the shoulder next to the slow lane, as I had lost the brakes by then, with the horn blaring. At least I think that's what happened, as it happened so quickly that many of the details were lost in the blur.

As to injuries: I've got a bruised left forearm that was caused by the airibag going off. I've also got a bruise (hematoma) on my right shin just below the knee, which immediately swelled up like a golfball (it's gone down now). Yeah, I'm a bit stiff today, and my neck is a bit sore as well, as I got bounced around pretty well. It was quite a ride, with multiple hits. I was taken by paramedics to a local hospital in which I was checked over. So I got my arm bruise bandaged up and they gave me a tetanus shot, mainly because I hadn't had one in years.

I also lost my glasses. I have no idea what happened to them. They may have flew out the moonroof or out the driver's window as they were both open. The police and paramedics looked for them but couldn't find them either.

I don't think anybody else was injured, which is remarkable considering 5 cars were involved.

I have to say that, in spite of the severity of the accident, the Subie really protected me. No glass was broken. All the doors all open and close as if nothing had happened. The only damage to the inside was the airbag which went off, and the driver's seatbelt won't retract.

So is it a total, or can it be salvaged? Don't know yet, as the insurance adjuster hasn't come by yet. I know there is chassis damage. The left rear tire is tucked under a bit, suggesting bent suspension parts, and I think the left front tire was pushed back towards the front door.

Edmunds drives Forester diesel

Forester 08 D 555.jpg

There are a lot of Subie and diesel fans out there waiting to hear what it's like to drive the diesel-powered Forester. Edmunds very own Erin Riches took a trip to Slovenia to do just that. She was part of a contingent of American journalists invited to check out the new Euro-spec model. Her Green Car Advisor report follows.

Subaru Selects Forester (Europe Only, Sorry) For Beefier, Cleaner New Diesel

One thing to ponder: Even though Subaru publicly states that they have no plans on bringing this car over here, ya gotta wonder--if that's the case--why did they invite a group of American writers over to test the car? My guess is this was a "feeler" session to see what kind of excitement this car generates; what works and what needs work; and of course, what's the sales potential here in the USA.

My take? It's coming in a couple of years. That is once they develop an automatic (CVT?) strong enough to handle the 258 lb-ft-of torque, which is 11 pounds more than what the Tribeca puts out.

Subaru may compete in WTCC

Subaru wtcc555.jpg

TouringCarTimes.com is reporting that Subaru is considering entering the FIA World Touring Car Championship. The reason being is that the upcoming WTCC and the WRC race car rules are going to be almost the same, so switching from one type of event to the other won't be that difficult.

One one hand I'm really excited about this news, as I've often wanted to see Subies compete in the WTCC. On the other hand, Subaru is still struggling with their new car in the WRC. If they're having trouble winning in the WRC--the motorsport series that made the WRX and STI famous--how do they expect to be successful by adding another racing catagory to their already stressed racing team?

August sales still awful, but not as awful as July

Big 6 graphic-August_08 _r1 555.jpg

As in July, only Nissan of the Big Six automakers, showed a profit. As compared to August of last year, sales for the auto industry are down roughly 15 percent.

One of the surprises here is that, unlike the rest of the industry, several of Nissan's trucks and SUVs had a really good month. Their formerly slow-selling Frontier midsize pickup broke out with 56-percent leap in August, totaling 9,140 sales. The Xterra SUV showed an incredible 77-percent increase with 8,208 units sold. One thing I'm happy to see is that Subaru continues to surprise with a 14 percent gain over last August. The new Forester had a 73 percent increase over last August!

Subaru Forester diesel

forester.2.0Dmontage3.jpg

As most of you know, Subaru is now selling a boxer diesel in Europe. To date it's been available only in the Legacy and Outback models, and paired with a 5-speed manual. While the horsepower is only 147 (in Forester-spec, the Legacy/Outback get 150), the torque is rated at a meaty 258 pound-feet, and it can be had from 1,800-2,400 rpm. To put that in perspective, the '09 WRX--with upped power, puts out 244 pound-feet at 4,000 rpm.

That lineup is about to expand next month in the UK when a new Forester diesel goes on sale. Even better, the 5-speed manual has been superseded by a new 6-speed manual, which is geared to make the best use of the diesel's excellent down low grunt. The rest of Europe will likely follow shortly. In fact diesel Foresters have already been spotted in Norway.

Next up will be a Impreza diesel. It should go on sale in the UK around the first of the year; and probably the rest of Europe too, either then or shortly thereafter (UK Subaru Impreza and Forester diesel with 6-speed tranny).

So the big question is, when will we get it? Hopefully in the next couple of years.

Subaru Bizjet?

Subaru Bizjet 555.jpg

Not much on this other than a couple of links, but it sounds like Subaru may be considering a building a small business jet, something along the lines of the HondaJet.

Mechanical engineer Matthew Saroff is reporting it on his blog. He got the info from Aviation Week (here registration required).

This is not entirely surprising, given Subaru's aeronautical background. I do agree with Saroff that it seems to be a pretty risky endeavor, but I also admit to knowing nothing about that market.

2009 Subaru WRX: Welcome back old friend

09.subaru.wrx.act.555.jpg

Today, August 15, marks the end of the SOA news embargo on ride impressions of the new-and-improved '09 WRX. I've read several already, and the consensus is unanimous. Subaru of Canada announces 2009 Imprezas

2009.impreza.wrx.260.jpg

As you might expect, the 2009 Canadian Imprezas are similar to what we get, but with a few exceptions.

WRX and WRX265

The current WRX remains as is, and is not re-badged as the 2.5 GT like in the U.S. There is a new more powerful 265-hp model which is named just that: the WRX265. None of the 2009 Canadian WRXs will be available with an automatic tranny.

2.5i

The changes here virtually mirror what's happening with the US-spec 2.5i models.

Nothing has yet been announced on the 2009 STI, for either the USA or Canada.

Second-Tier Asian auto brands shine in down market

The Asian "Davids" of the auto industry are showing their stuff as the "Goliaths" stumble in this new automotive world.

Hyundai, Kia, Subaru and Suzuki are all showing gains in sales (and market share) in these tough times. A lot of it is luck (as in timing), but also in having the right products at the right time--and they are are not saddled with a large percentage of huge profit-sucking vehicles in their product portfolio.

Subaru Forester260.JPGYeah, Subaru has the Tribeca, which is still hurting them despite the refresh from a year ago. Even so, their market share is up from about 1 percent or so to about 1.52 percent. Still not huge by any means, but it is certainly heading in the right direction. Their all-new Impreza and Forester models are selling at a record rate. Hyundai's market share is now up to 4.22 percent, Kia is at 2.39 percent, and Suzuki is at 0.83 percent; all records for each of these brands.

Here's AutoObserver's take: Down Market Equals New Records for Second-Tier Asian Automakers

More good news is expected for Subaru in future months as the much-needed refresh of the '09 WRX is getting good initial reviews on the Subaru fan sites (unlike last year when the car debuted). Better news still is the '09 WRX price will begin close to that of the '08 model.

UK Subaru Impreza and Forester diesel with 6-speed tranny

Subaru_Impreza_260.jpg

Slowly but surely Subaru is spreading their nifty new 2.0L diesel around to other models. First it appeared in European Legacys and Outbacks, but using a 5-speed manual gearbox. Now not only is the UK-spec Impreza getting that oil burner, but it is also being paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Deliveries are expected to begin after the first of the year.

When the Subie diesel makes it Stateside (it's a-comin' folks, just not sure when...), I fully expect it to also have this 6-speed tranny hooked up to it, as well as a CVT option.

Full story here.

Also of interest to Subie diesel fans is the all-new Forester in the UK which also has a diesel option, beginning in September. It too comes with a 6-speed manual.

gMeter performance meter works on both iPhone and iPod Touch

gMeter555.jpg

gMeter logo 260.jpg

There have been several new "gearhead-oriented" apps recently introduced that can be put on the new Apple iPhone, and here is one more. It's called the gMeter, a name which appears to be a "spin" on the Apple devices in that the second letter in the name is capitalized. One of the unique advantages of the gMeter is that it also works on the iPod Touch as well as the iPhone. That alone should make this very popular, as there are a gazillion iPods out there.

Of interest to me is that the inventor is Craig Hunter, who has long been a member of the "Subaru Crew" here at Edmunds. Craig, who's other job is with NASA, and he is literally a "Rocket Scientist."

From the web site: gMeter is an app that turns the iPhone and iPod Touch into a vehicle performance computer. By using the onboard accelerometer in these devices, gMeter can measure forward and lateral g forces and use this data to compute acceleration, velocity, and distance traveled. gMeter is setup to compute performance for timed distance (1/4 mile or 400 meter), timed speed (0-60 mph or 0-100kph), or timed braking (60-0 mph or 100-0 kph), and offers a hands-free automatic start feature (based on vehicle motion). gMeter also offers a full manual mode.

gMeter can display data and compute performance in US or metric units, and data from performance runs can be saved and e-mailed right from the device. The software has a calibration mode used for setup, and offers a correction to account for vehicle pitch under acceleration and deceleration.

It is available through iTunes App Store and costs $8.99. More info can be found here.

2009 Mitsubishi Ralliart to start at $27,165

2009.lancer.ralliart.260.jpgAnybody notice that on the same day that Subaru announced their updated '09 WRX, that Mitsubishi announced prices on their WRX-fighter, the '09 Ralliart? Think maybe that the Mitsu-Gang was trying to let a little air out of the WRX balloon?

Now it should come as no surprise to long-time readers here that I favor the WRX over the Ralliart, but I have to admit that the Mitsubishi has several items on their standard and/or option list that I really wish Subaru offered as well. They are:

• The Mitsubishi comes standard with a very trick Twin Clutch-Sportronic¨ Shift Transmission (TC-SST). Frankly, my preference is that this were optional and not standard, as I'm a dedicated 3-pedal devotee. Still, it's great to have this on the check list.

• The Ralliart offers an optional ($2,750) Recaro seat package which bundles a high-intensity-discharge headlights, a 650-watt Rockford Fosgate Punch premium sound system with nine speakers and a 10-inch subwoofer, Sirius Satellite Radio with six months of service and a six-CD/MP3 in-dash head unit.

• It also has a 40 GB hard drive too for storing music. This may be packaged with the above item, or is part of the navigation package? Regardless, I like the idea of having a multi-gigabyte hard drive.

So Subaru, as great as the new WRX upgrade is, here are a few holes that still need to be filled.

2009 Subaru Impreza WRX and 2.5GT

2009 Impreza WRX_5Dr1_555.jpg

2009 Impreza WRX_5Dr2_555.jpg

News is beginning to filter out on the specifics of the "updated" '09 Impreza WRX and new (sort of) Impreza 2.5GT.

WRX

This new WRX is the car that should have arrived last summer as the 2008 model, and not this summer as the 2009 model. No matter how SOA or FHI tries to put a positive spin on it, the 2008 was a flat-out disappointment to many. Go to any Subaru fan site, or read just about any media-written road test on the '08 WRX, and the opinions are pretty consistent; nice car, but where did the legendary WRX fun go?

Well folks, it looks like the '09 WRX has found it's lost mojo--and that's great! The fun is back, and it also has added some much needed STI visual cues (grille, rear wing and painted garnish strip on hatch) that link the WRX to its' more muscular brother. Here are the important specifics:

• New, more powerful version of the turbocharged intercooled 2.5-liter Boxer engine: now 265 hp @ 6000 rpm and 244 lb.-ft. torque @ 4000 rpm vs. 224 hp @ 5,200 rpm and 226 lb.-ft. @ 2,800 rpm for 2008 model. It should be noted that the WRX's new-found power occurs higher up in the rev band.

• 5-speed manual transmission only (new Impreza 2.5GT model features standard automatic.)

• New suspension tuning with higher-rate springs, larger diameter stabilizer bars and dedicated damping force tuning for sharper handling response.

• 17x7-inch gray painted alloy wheels with wider 225/45R17 summer performance tires.

• Exterior Aero Package now standard; both models get STI®-type grille with WRX badge; new style exhaust tailpipe tips for WRX 4-Door sedan.

• Rear trunk spoiler (4-door); STI rear gate spoiler (5-door).

• Optional Premium Package gains power moonroof.

• Aluminum alloy pedal covers including driver's footrest.

• WRX-exclusive carbon black checkered upholstery with red stitching and embroidered WRX logo; WRX leather-wrapped steering wheel with red stitching.

Mitsubishi Lancer Sportback X

Mitsubishi-crossover-lancer555.jpg

I guess better late than never, as it looks like Mitsubishi will be offering a "lifted" Lancer Sportback X that would compete with both the Subaru Outback and Outback Sport.

The image above is pure speculation, but probably gives a pretty good indication as to what this vehicle could look like. No word on mechanical changes other than the rumored lifted suspension. It would be pretty cool if they offered it with the turbo from the Ralliart (or EVO).

Carscoop is reporting the car will be released internationally sometime in 2010.

Pastrana and Block bike-STI video

Anybody who has been following the career of Travis Pastrana knows that he came out of the motorcycle ranks, and is famous for his back flip jumps on bikes--and especially so for the incredible double back flip he did a year or so ago.

Now he and fellow Subaru rally racer Ken Block have teamed up again to do yet another spectacular video (remember this one? 2009 Subaru WRX teaser video)--which will go on the cover of Racer X. I also wouldn't be surprised if Subaru uses this in some marketing fashion down the road.

Just had this forwarded to me from an impeccable source (no, I ain't tellin'...). Anyway it is not an '09 STI, but rather something from Easy Street Racing. This is apparently some photography being done for a magazine shoot. 2009 Subaru WRX teaser video

'09 WRX 3 sedan555.jpg

This video was done in late April by Subaru, and it shows Subaru race drivers Travis Pastrana and Ken Block doing silly stuff with an STI and what appears to be an 2009 WRX sedan. Link here. There will be an announcement about the 2009 Imprezas next week from SOA, and this video certainly fires up curiosity among Subie fans.

As has been rumored you can see the STI grille on the sedan, but using a WRX badge in place of the STI badge. The video is most likely raw footage that might be used in an upcoming WRX commercial. The intent here appears to both visually and spiritually link the '09 WRX with its' heady brother.

Subaru UK announces three special WRXs at British Auto Show

UK WRX1 555.jpg

UK WRX2 555.jpg

The UK is getting two--possibly three--special edition WRXs, which no doubt are meant to counter any upcoming Mitsubishi EVO challenges. They are a 252 ps WRX-S, a 325ps WRX STI 330S, and finally a 375ps WRX STI 380S concept.

Of most interest to American Subie fans is the UK-spec WRX-S (pictured above), as that could well hint at what we might see in the US-spec 2009 WRX. The car mirrors most if not all the items mentioned in recent rumors such as in a more powerful 2.5 engine and a tweaked suspension and aero kit. It also has some STI visual styling cues, such as the STI grille and painted out (former chrome) panel on the rear hatch. One thing I don't expect to see is the 18" wheels and tires seen here. The U.S. model will be getting upgraded rubber and grayed out wheels, but will remain 17" units.

Subaru of America is supposed to announce the 2009 Imprezas in about a week, so it won't be long before we know the whole deal.

Better be quick here, as I'm not sure how long this link will remain live. A poster from NASIOC (North American Subaru Impreza Owners Club) got hold of a memo from SOA to dealers about some of the changes that the '09 WRX is getting, and posted it.

Needless to say SOA will be none too happy about this, and probably will pressure NASIOC to remove it. If that happens, fear not as there will be an "official" announcement at the end of this month on the '09 WRX and the other new new Imprezas.

2009 Subaru STI spec.C being tested at the 'Ring

wrx.sti.spec.c.tr1.kgp.555.jpg

2007_Subaru spec.C.JPG

Long-time fans of the Subaru STI need no introduction to the spec.C. For those who aren't familiar, the "C" stands for competition, and has been offered in Japan (bottom image) for some time on the previous generation model. Now Subaru is about to release a new spec.C based on the current platform.

Some of what Subaru does to make a spec.C out of a normal STI are the following: First of all the car is made lighter. It has thinner glass and an aluminum roof and rear hatch, as well as a smaller battery and fuel tank. This results in a 70kg loss in weight. From a performance standpoint, there are larger brakes, a more taut suspension, and perhaps some engine tweaks as well. Unlike the test mule here (top image) you can expect a roof scoop, and an upgraded aero package as well as gold wheels.

The new spec.C is expected to go on sale in Japan towards the end of this year or early next year. There's no word as to if we will see this model--but it would be great if it did show up, as it would quiet those saying the STI has gone soft.

Bear 1, Subaru 0

till7-14-08bearattackscar120.JPG

Okay, the guy pictured above is not the owner, just the goofy neighbor who got caught up in the excitement of a bear shredding the interior of a Subaru Impreza.

Not sure where this happened, other than to say it was in bear country. As you can see by the images that follow the jump, a Subaru is no match for a hungry and/or angry black bear. It all happened late at night, when the bear somehow locked him/herself in the car and couldn't get out. Around 4:00 am the bear set off the car horn and woke folks up.

So let this be a lesson to all you sloppy drivers who leave bags of potato chips in your car in the north woods: A bear's gonna getcha!

2010 Subaru Legacy speculation

2010? Legacy 555.jpg

The above composite image is from two Japanese publications. The illustration on the left appeared several months ago and the image on the right recently showed up here.

My take, based on these illustrations, and from what I've heard, I think we're fairly close here. Both these images show a common stying direction even though some of the details differ. I expect the car to debut this winter, perhaps at the Detroit auto show, and will go on sale here next spring.

Interesting to note that in the story with the latest image, it's mentioned that there will be a hybrid version. It's expected that a CVT will show up replacing the current 4EAT; not sure if it will replace the 5EAT found on turbos and H6 models, however.

Subaru Exiga announced

Subaru finally took the wraps off their JDM-specific Exiga. Anyone following Straigtline knows this is a new Subie 7-seater, but for the the Japanese market. As to whether it will be exported to other markets, that's not known at the moment, but my guess is that it will be.

The interior strongly hints of the new Forester and Impreza, as much of the dash and interior door panels appears to use parts from those models...

Subaru WRC2008 takes second at Acropolis race debut

Yep, Sebastien Loeb and Citroen took the usual top spot at the 2008 WRC Acropolis rally this weekend. However, for Subaru fans, the debut of the all-new WRC 2008 rally racer, was equally noteworthy. In the hands of Petter Solberg, it placed second in this very grueling rally, which is known as one of the toughest on the WRC race calender. Much hope and great expectations are being placed on this all-new racer from Subaru, and in its initial outing showed great promise for the future...

3.7 Subaru Legacy STI rumors

New rumors of a next-generation Subaru Legacy STI have surfaced, but this time with a 3.7L engine putting out around 450 horsepower.

This is the second time I've seen "3.7" mentioned. Subaru does make a 3.6 H6, so I'm not sure if this is a typo that was picked up by both parties—or if there really is a 3.7 H6. Adding to the speculation, there have also been rumors of an all-new H4, either being 2.4L or 2.5L, or somewhere in between...

Subaru coupe benchmarking Integra Type R

Even though the Acura Integra Type-R coupe is FWD, and is out of production, Subaru has chosen that car to model the performance and size specs after for their new RWD coupe. Due in 2011, and being co-developed with Toyota, the new car is expected to have an MSRP under $20K for base models. It will use the Subaru boxer engine, and there have been rumors of a possible AWD version also being offered, although there is no mention of that in this latest Inside Line report.

Inside Line also reports that the Toyota version will be a Japan-only vehicle, while the Subaru version will be marketed worldwide...

Government-proposed "footprint" fuel regulation could kill performance cars

If the government gets it way, cars like Porsche, Ferrari and even Subaru could be in a heap of trouble down the road. You see what the govenment want to do is to classify vehicles by their "footprint," or the amount of square feet they occupy.

In doing so a Toyota Camry would be classified along with cars like the Ferrari 612 Scaglietti. That means both cars (mid-size by this new standard) would have to achieve 30 mpg, which wouldn't be that tough for the Camry, but much so difficult for the Ferrari...

Toyota and Subaru: A win-win pairing

Also mentioned here are some joint-development projects that are under consideration, one of which is a small rear-drive sport coupe using the 2.0 Subaru boxer engine, but badged as a Toyota—and maybe as a Subaru too.

Subaru R1e: 2008 New York Auto Show

Now that lithium-ion batteries exist, manufacturers are willing to take the risk of actually letting people drive all-electric cars. Forty Subaru R1e hatchbacks are motoring around Tokyo as we speak, as part of a partnership with the Tokyo Electric Power Company. Today in New York, Subaru announced it's giving two of these tiny, electric-powered subcompacts to the New York Power Authority.

Obviously, this is not a money-making venture, and so Subaru didn't even bother to change the front fascia on the R1e, even though it's the memorable snout from the last of the previous-generation Imprezas. Actually, the company didn't even bother to make a left-hand-drive version.

Subaru thinking about a third WRX model

Rumors are starting to build about the possibility of a third Subaru WRX model being offered, one that splits the gap in terms of price between the current WRX and the STI. The current price gap between the WRX and STI has grown from what it was, and Subaru officials have pretty much admitted that there could be room for another model that falls somewhere in between the two.

One rumor I heard not too long a go is that there may be an STI Limited offered, possibly as early as this summer as an '09 model. I would assume it would have a moonroof, the heated seat package, and possibly leather and standard NAV too...

2008 Detroit Auto Show preview: 2009 Subaru Forester

Here you go all you Subaru Forester fans: We now have official images of the US-spec 2009 model, which will debut at the Detroit Auto show in a couple of weeks.

Those of you following Straightline for the past month or so won't see any surprises here, as we've previewed this vehicle too many times to count with all the spy images that had hit the Net. What we can confirm now is some of the specs, which until now were unavailable.

As per the new Impreza, the new Forester now rides on a 103" wheelbase, which is up from 99.4" of the outgoing model. This should yield large gains in rear seat room, which has long been a complaint of earlier models. In addition all Foresters will come with VDC, side airbags with a rollover sensor as well as a four-wheel disk brakes with a Brake Assist safety system. The car is about 3" longer than before, and it gains a double-wishbone rear suspension (also like the Impreza) for a better ride and improved handling.

Manual tranny models come with an Incline Start Assist, which helps keep the vehicle from rolling backwards when starting off on hills. Ground clearance has also been increased to 8.9." As before, models include the base X trim level, a turbo XT, and a range-topping LL Bean model. Navigation will be optional, and there is now iPod® and MP3 capability as well as being pre-wired for XM® or SIRIUS® Satellite Radio. Engines have been re-tuned to provide better mid-range power. It is believed that the Forester will continue using the 4-speed automatic, but with SportShift capability. I expect this automatic  transmission to be replaced in a year or so with either the 5-speed automatic or a CVT.

I've said this before, and I'll say it again: This new Forester is sure to be a hit. It addresses many of the complaints of previous models, and is (finally!) a real looker to boot. Lastly, I'm really happy that they kept it boxy, and have resisted the swoopy styling fad now sweeping the CUV market.

More 2009 Subaru Forester images

A whole slew of new scanned images of the 2009 Forester have shown up over at NASIOC. Some of these images are from the same brochure that was posted on Straightline earlier (here and here), but are much clearer and show more views of the vehicle as well. The other new images give a much better sense of what the complete vehicle looks like, including an interior shot.

The more I see, the more I like. I suspect Subaru will have a real hit on their hands with this new model. One of my early concerns, is a non-issue; that being that it has a decent rear 3/4-window, so rear outward visibility should still be quite good. The vehicle looks finally to be "right-sized," and the styling is not likely to raise any eyebrows in disgust or horror.

In fact early responses over at NASIOC based upon these images are quite positive—which is saying something, as many over there have been among the most vocal critics of the new Impreza's styling.

Subaru considers offering non-AWD and non-boxer engines

The title of this thread is one I hoped I would never have to type: "Subaru considers offering non-AWD and non-boxer engines"

There had been a few rumblings over the past year or so that Subaru may be considering offering non-AWD models, and now we have this story coming from Subaru's of Australia's managing director, Nick Senior. The reasons for the switch are expected ever-tougher fuel mileage and emission demands in the future. According to Senior, if this were to occur, it would happen after 2010.

AWD and boxer engines are "core technologies, and are a key part of the brand," said Mr...

It's 499cc single-cylinder with DOHC and producing 50 hp. The bike is called the HS500sa, and is made in China. Apparently this engine has been around, but used in Polaris snowmobiles.

So we have here a modern-day "thumper," much like the old BSA Gold Stars and Velocettes of years gone by...

2007 LA Auto Show: 2008 Subaru WRX STI Gets $34,995 Sticker Price

No big surprises at the North American debut of the 2008 Subaru WRX STI. The announced specs of the 2.5-liter version are no different than the Japanese 2.0-liter shown in Tokyo. It still has 305 hp and 290 lb-ft of torque, although the horsepower peaks at 6,000 rpm while max torque is delivered at just 4,000 rpm. Like the Japanese version, Subaru claims the WRX STI will go from zero to 60 in just 4.9 seconds...

New 2009 Subaru Forester?

To date there has been surprisingly little news on the all-new 2009 Forester, which is widely expected to make its world debut at the Detroit auto show in January.

The sketch, which has not been verified, suggests sort of a mini Tribeca. Be that as it may, and assuming this is close to the real deal, I'm not happy to see yet another wrong-angled (meaning poor visibility) rear quarter window. Jeez, I can't believe how everyone is following the Murano's bad design lead here; it's like sheep being lead to slaughter...

STI at Laguna Seca and EVO Dual Clutch Tranny woes

Thanks to our very own Edmunds in-house Subie guru, Loren, we have some images of the all-new US-spec Subaru STI taken at Laguna Seca Raceway. The new STl will be introduced at the LA auto show in a few days.

And in somewhat related news, the STI's arch rival, the all-new Mitsubishi Evo has hit a snag with its Dual Clutch transmission. It turns out that some last-minute glitches have turned up, and Mitsubishi wisely decided to postpone that option for a few months until the gremlins have been worked out...

Ski-jumping Subaru STI

No, this is not the effort of some Photoshop expert. It's Subaru Rally Team USA racer and DC Shoes co-founder Ken Block taking an STI down a ski jump in New Zealand—and yes those are two snowboarders shadowing Block and his flying Subie.

Full story here and here. You can also pick up the December issue of Snowboarder magazine, as an image from the photoshoot graces the cover...

LA auto show preview: US-spec Subaru STI

Long suspected, it has now been revealed that Subaru will debut the US-spec STI at the LA auto show. A Subaru dealer over at NASIOC is reporting having received an e-mail from SOA confirming the news.

Subaru G4e concept doubles the battery range of electric cars

We've reported on the Subaru G4e concept that was recently shown at the Tokyo auto show several times. However, I suspect, because of all the show hoopla at the time, that the main feature of this car may have been lost; and that being the huge improvement in plug-in battery technology that this car displays.

The 65-kilowatt, high energy-density lithium-ion batteries that power the vehicle gives the G4e a 200km range from a charge, which more than doubles the previous R1e’s range. By using a quick-charger, the battery can be brought up to 80% charge in only 15 minutes...

Toyota and Fuji Heavy Industries consider more tie-ups

Earlier this week word spread that Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru) would build larger cars for Daihatsu, which is a subsiduary of Toyota. Now this story indicates that the Subaru and Toyota relationship could expand even further. Subaru needs a vehicle in the 1.0L - 1.5L range, and this is an area in which Toyota might be able to help Subaru.

"We're considering a variety of tie-ups to offer advantages to the Toyota group," Ikuo Mori, Toyota's president said at a press conference Wednesday for the auto maker's earnings for the first fiscal half...

First (!) JDM Subaru STI ride report

To the best of my knowledge this is the first 2008 STI ride report done by a non-Subaru employee—meaning a potential customer. Another thing, not only was the STI announced today at the Tokyo auto show, they're already at Japanese Subaru dealers, ready for test drives!

Whoa! Did I say ready for test drives? So in Japan Subie dealers will let customers actually test drive STIs?..

2007 Tokyo Motor Show: Subaru Exiga

Ikuo Mori, president and CEO of Fuji Heavy Industries, gave only passing mention to the Subaru Exiga at the company's Tokyo press conference. He never used the word "minivan," but that's exactly what the Exiga (or whatever name FHI settles on) will be when the production version goes on sale.

It should do well in a market where, based on our extensive observation during long bus rides to and from Makuhari Messe, buyers prefer hinged rear doors instead of sliders, and four-cylinder engines instead of thirsty sixes, while insisting upon a minimum of one entertainment screen per row of seating. -- Erin Riches, Senior Content Editor

2007 Tokyo Auto Show: Subaru G4e Concept

Most likely no one will remember anything but the STI from Subaru's press conference today in Tokyo... mainly because the other two cars will never inspire philosophical debates on steering feedback or the proper use of the word fugly. One of them was the Subaru G4e Concept, an electric car with a lithium-ion battery pack mounted under its floor. In our full story, we were underwhelmed by its scant 200-km driving range, which is exactly the sentiment you'd expect from California-based writers.

However, after examining the car in the metal, we came away with a slightly higher opinion of the G4e. First, Subaru has obviously given some thought to how one might compensate for the massive amount of weight battery packs add to a car. In addition to mounting the pack low, the company designed an aluminum chassis for the G4e, which is unheard of in a subcompact.

2007 SEMA Preview: Subaru Vegas Invasion

Not surprisingly, Subaru, a brand synonymous with the tuner crowd, will be at Las Vegas in force. One such event is the "Subie Invasion 2007." More info on this Subiefest SEMA event can be found here.

2008 NAIAS Preview

While it's several months out, and we still have Tokyo, SEMA and the LA shows to do, the folks running the Detroit show have let loose with some teaser info regarding this January event.

From the NAIAS October newsletter:

Ford will unveil a new small concept vehicle for the U.S. market that will share the underbody with a concept that Ford unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The Ford Verve (rendering pictured above), revealed in Frankfurt, is a crossover vehicle carried on a small B-segment platform...

2007 Tokyo Auto Show: 2008 Subaru WRX STI

We didn't learn many new facts about the 2008 Subaru WRX STI today in Tokyo, but somehow, and maybe it's jet lag talking, the car was less unattractive than expected.

Then again, with one unveiled STI at the edge of the display, a veiled STI on the stage and the WRC car presiding over the whole stand, it was hard not to be just a little excited about what this car might be like to drive.

Odd Subaru Legacys spotted

While Subaru isn't talking, it's been long suspected that they may expand the STI line beyond the Impreza (and Forester in Japan) to the Legacy, and maybe even beyond that. With that in mind one quick-thinking NASIOC member just caught this unusual Legacy via his camera phone on the road.

Note the apparent on-board testing equipment and the WRX-like hood scoop. Also note the really strange asymmetrical wheels (well, it's Subaru, so you can expect "strange"); and the hint of Outback-like front wheel blisters, which suggest larger tires...

2007 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: More images of the Subaru G4e concept

New images of the previously posted Subaru G4e concept (2007 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Subaru G4e EV concept) have shown up on the Net.

The more I see this car, the more I like it—and I do see a "Subaru look" emerging here. The front hints at what we see in the new Impreza. My feeling is that the front of the new Impreza, while pretty good, is not fully resolved...

Subaru STI preliminary specs

For those who are curious as to how car manufacturers tailor the specs of any of given model to different worldwide markets, you might find this link interesting. It has to do with the upcoming Subaru STI, and it lists in great detail the specs for North American models, as well as Japanese, Australian and European models. Keep in mind that these are "preliminary specs," and are subject to revision since these documents have been published.

The specs are on four JPEGs, which are too large to post here and to have them readable, as you can see by the above image...

2007 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: More images of Subaru Exiga concept

More (and better) images of the 7-passenger Subaru Exiga concept (2007 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Subaru Exiga concept) have surfaced. Except for its tall stature, I still think this is a tip-off as to what the next Legacy and Outback wagons might look like. Hopefully they will tone down the use of chrome before it is approved for production.

2007 Tokyo Auto Show Preview: Subaru G4e EV concept

Subaru, still searching for a definitive brand look, is borrowing a few design cues from Acura with the unusual reverse bend seen at the bottom of the taillights, and headlights as well. I noticed this also appears on the taillights on the '08 Impreza sedan.

This G4e EV concept will debut at the Tokyo auto show. It's powered by lithium-ion batteries, and has a range of about 120 miles.
