At first, this prototype for the next-generation Porsche 911 didn't look like much. In fact, it didn't even look like a new test mule given all the 997-series bodywork. But look closer and it's clear there are a few changes to this prototype that aren't on the current model.
Most notable is the "double bubble" roof, although in this case it's less like individual bubbles and more like a dent in the middle. Also note the covered tail section and revised rear bumper. Hard to tell what's going on back there, but clearly some changes are in store as nearly every prototype we've seen has featured similar camouflage.
With the 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class coupe already on the way, a convertible version was all but inevitable. Although it's not that hard to imagine what that convertible will look like, these latest spy shots spell it all out for you.
Most of the design cues revealed here are fairly conventional with a soft top, hard cover and a small wind deflector between the rear seats. As the test car got underway, however, our photographers noticed an additional feature that the current CLK cabriolet lacks.
As you can see, what looks to be an auxiliary wind deflector has been placed at the top of the windshield. We assume it bumps the airflow that much higher to keep it off precious bouffants behind the wheel. We assume it works too, as the Germans wouldn't dare use all their technical know how to develop a mere toy, right? First Drive: 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe
Inside Line has confirmed that the upcoming Audi R8 Convertible will appear in the sequel to Iron Man due out next May. Spotted on the Nurburgring almost a year ago, the soft-top version of the Audi R8 is expected to make its official world debut at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show in September.
We heard it was coming, but we didn't think it would look quite like this. This 2010 Honda Accord hatch, or Crosshatch, or whatever it's going to be called was spotted on a trip through Las Vegas.
It was probably on its way to Death Valley for some last minute hot weather testing before it goes on sale later this year. No doubt designed to take on the Toyota Venza in the "cool wagon" category, this Accord hatchback is more carlike than even the Venza. Fine if that's what you're into, but we kind of prefer the real Accord wagon that Europe gets. We'll see how this version goes over in the States soon enough.
Detroit might be down, but it is also out -- very, very out there. And by "Detroit," we mean, of course, the cosmopolitan hot spot of Howell, MI.
That's where our spy shooter snapped off these exclusive shots of this, um, Acura Integra Speedster four-door. We presume this is an homage to either the spectacular Lincoln Continental four-door convertibles of the '60s or the result of prolonged effects of the brown acid, also of the '60s.
Sure, this may look like a back-yard hack-job, but the details reveal that it is, in fact, a back-yard hack-job. For example, by keeping portions of the broken glass in place even after the backlight has been smashed out, the builder is giving a knowing nod to the car's origins. And the structural(-ish) re-enforcement ties the cut-down A-pillar to the rear bulkhead for no real reason. And note that the builder has also substituted a shorty windshield in traditional speedster fashion because leaving the full-height windshield on this baby would look, you know, stupid. Capping it all off is a little home-brewed windblocker fashioned of a sheet of "cardboard." This material sandwiches a piece of corrugated material between its two faces for improved rigidity.
Ignore the trippy camo for a minute and you can just make out the face-lifted 2011 Ford Edge.
Due around this time next year, the second-generation Edge looks as though it's sticking with Ford's "bold" theme a little longer. This prototype features a thicker two-bar grille up front and projector headlights that make it look like the love-child of a Taurus X and 5-Series BMW. The front bumper also has a sportier look that will fit in nicely among Ford's latest designs like the 2010 Fusion.
The clear-lens look of the rear lamps will survive the transition to the updated model, although the pattern is slightly different. A big dual exhaust sticking out behind the rear bumper screams "EcoBoost" and we expect some variation of the new 3.5-liter twin turbo V6 in this version of the Edge. Also look for the possibility of a new four-cylinder powerplant as Ford looks to improve its fleet average in the face of tougher federal CAFÃ requirements.
This is the 2011 Ford Fiesta sedan, at least in prototype form. Not surprisingly, it looks very much like the Fiesta concept sedan shown at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. Back then it was known as the Verve and it wasn't a bad looking little car.
It still looks better than most compact sedans, but we hope that Ford does the right thing and offers the hatchback too. It's a much more compelling car even if it's a given that the sedan would sell better.
This is the long-rumored Honda hatchback/crossover/wagon thing. As you can see, it was shot by one Mr. M. Balisky, apparently while he was vacationing in the Great Smoky Mountains, one of America's most popular national parks.
We're guessing it won't be quite so popular with Honda engineers from now on, as they've done a pretty good job of keeping the lid on this new model up to this point. Most speculation points to a fall debut for this variation of the Accord, but as usual Honda is saying much for now.
We've seen it in cold weather testing, and now we've got video of the 2010 Mini Cooper Crossover lapping the Nurburgring. With only the BMW-PSA 1.6-liter turbo four motivating its poundage, we're guessing Mini engineers were sorting out the chassis tuning, rather than trying to chase down any Nissan GT-Rs.
The Mini Crossover is expected to show in final production form at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show, with U.S. sales beginning in early 2010.
Last August Inside Line scooped the world with a report that Nissan is working on a convertible version of its Murano crossover. Yeah, it sounded nuts to us too, but it was true then and it is true now.
Sources inside Nissan tell us the droptop SUV is still a go and will arrive at dealers before the summer of 2010.
Much of the information we published last August is still right on. The 2011 Murano convertible will be produced in limited numbers, and will be targeted at empty-nesters who need room to carry the grandkids, but still want something fun. And like the new 370Z convertible, it will stick with a more traditional soft top to keep weight and cost down.
The Murano's current 265-horsepower 3.5-liter V6 and continuously variable transmission (CVT) will remain, and front- or all-wheel drive will be available.
However, we did get one thing wrong. Unlike the image above, the 2011 Nissan Murano Convertible will be a two-door. That's right, sort of like a higher riding PT Cruiser convertible.
We showed you spy photos of the 2010 Volkswagen Golf R20 a month ago and now we have spy video of the same car testing on the Nurburgring. It may have lost the tell tale burble of the R32's exhaust, but it looks as though it's making good time nonetheless.
Here's hoping we actually get to find out. Last we heard Volkswagen wasn't planning to sell this car in the U.S. We should know for sure by the end of the year.
It lives. Yes, the Lexus LF-A still exists and it has returned to the Nurburgring, We assume it's moving closer to production, but that's what we thought the last time it showed up.
There are some minor bodywork changes this time around. The C-pillar treatment has obviously been altered and the front end looks a little different. Thankfully, the unique exhaust arrangement is still intact. If this on-again, off-again project ever gets finished up, expect to see it debut at this year's Tokyo auto show in the fall.
From the "wait...who?" files comes this curious tale.
This morning, Autoblog, a blog apparently about auto, posted an item entitled "Reader Spy: Hyundai Equus Takes to U.S. Streets." Okay, no biggie. Not sure why anyone would get too excited about a really big Hyundai luxury sedan not yet sold in the U.S., but okay.
The first line of the story read: "This is the new Hyundai Equus in the steel and on U.S. roads, courtesy of Autoblog reader Alex Krafcik." Oh, okay...no, wait, Krafcik? Isnt' t that the name of the CEO of the U.S. arm of Hyundai? Yes, it is. John Krafcik. So, "Spy" might be slightly overstating the case, no?
So they're not really spy photos, but the fact that Krafcik is running around Southern California in one of Hyundai's home market flagships is still noteworthy. The car was displayed at the New York Auto Show last month "to get public reaction", so it's pretty clear that Hyundai is still considering the idea of a luxury brand. Even if that doesn't happen, a Hyundai-badged model above the current Genesis is certainly a possibility.
Get used to the level of camouflage you see on this 2010 Jaguar XJ. It's a growing trend among manufacturers who are hellbent on keeping their designs hidden.
Still, it's pretty obvious that this XJ will be a drastic departure from the current model. Jaguar has apparently given up on its traditional "long and lean" look in favor of a wider, more substantial design. It won't be long until we find out for sure as the 2010 Jaguar XJ is scheduled for an official debut in early July.
Fresh off a mid-cycle update for 2009, the Porsche Boxster is already well into the development phase of the fully redesigned 2011 model. Seen here lapping the Nurburgring and ripping through the German countryside, this Boxster looks and sounds much like the current model.
There was a rumor circulating late last year that Porsche might be considering a turbocharged, four-cylinder powerplant as the base engine for the next Boxster. This prototype certainly doesn't sound like it's a four-cylinder, but that doesn't rule out the possibility in the future. After all, Porsche has to meet the same fuel economy regulations that everybody else does.
Our shooters in Germany finally caught a glimpse of the 2011 BMW 6 Series. Sporting a soft convertible top and BMW's now trademark camouflage swirls, the big coupe looks as though it's sticking with its current shape and size.
A good thing? We'll reserve judgment on the styling at this point. For now, we'll be content just listening to this early prototype running the Nurburgring as it sounds quite healthy. And let's face it, the 6 Series needs a healthy motor to move that much weight around.
The upcoming 2010 BMW X1 was spotted recently during filming of a commercial. Not surprisingly, it looks much like the X1 concept that was shown at the 2008 Paris Auto Show last fall.
We were hoping for some measure of improvement in the styling department. As is, the BMW X1 isn't really giving us to much to get excited about. We'll see how it looks when it shows up in the States this fall.
Porsche engineers told Inside Line that an RS version of the latest GT3 is definitely in the works. It will arrive in Europe later this year as a 2010 model. The U.S. version will take a bit longer, more like early next year as a 2011.
The talkative engineers also gave us one more bit of interesting information. Remember that 911 prototype that was spotted on the Nurburgring with the huge fixed wing stuck to its rear end?
Well, turns out that was just another 998 prototype. The engineers thought it would be amusing to see what kind of speculation it generated. See, those Germans aren't so stuffy after all.
At this point we've seen the upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG in the flesh, but never completely uncovered. These latest shots reveal more exterior detail than ever before and it's looking quite promising.
The shapes of the greenhouse and nose section are clearly visible now and they both show clear signs of the SLS's retro-inspired design. Smaller details like the headlights, drilled brake rotors and vents holes in the front quarter panels add a few more clues to the look of the final design.
Oh come on, you weren't expecting anything else from the next-generation 2011 Porsche 911 were you? It has looked this way for decades, so no matter how extensive the mechanical changes are to the 998-series of this classic sportscar, it's always going to look familiar on the outside.
More info and video of this prototype on the Nurburgring after the jump.
Maybe you've seen pictures of the 2010 Audi RS5 before. The prototypes were caught roaming around the California desert in varying degrees of camouflage last summer. But other than indicating that the program was indeed proceeding, the cobbled-together test mules didn't expose any details.
Now the RS5 is undergoing high-speed testing on the Nurburgring, and the prototypes look a little more finished. Our spy video also gives us our first chance to hear the high-performance coupe, and it delivers a good hint at what's under the hood.
Sure, it's a camouflaged car running the 'Ring, but Suzuki released it to the media to remind everybody that plans for an all-new midsize "sport sedan" are still in the works. And nothing says sporty like the Nurburgring.
You might remember talk of this sedan from a few months back. Shown in concept form as the Kizashi 3 at last year's New York Show, Suzuki cancelled plans to unveil the production version to conserve cash. Well, the car is still on track for production and Suzuki says it expects to have it on dealer lots by the end of this year. Expect to see an official debut within the next six months.
This Taurus X-looking test mule is actually an early prototype for the 2011 Ford Explorer. Since gas guzzling body-on-frame SUVs are out of favor these days, the next-generation Explorer will switch to a car-based, front-wheel drive platform.
Only the front clip of this prototype has actual Explorer bodywork, hence the minimal camouflage. From what we can see, the nose shows only limited similarity to the Ford Explorer America concept shown in Detroit last year. We're guessing it probably doesn't have a diesel powerplant either.
Caught just yesterday testing on the Nurburgring, the R20 as it may be called will get a 260-horsepower version of the 2.0-liter TFSI engine used in the GTI. It will also get all-wheel drive like the old V6-powered R32, and by the looks of this prototype, a pair of center-exit exhaust pipes.
After its recent freshening, the Porsche Boxster is headed toward a full redesign. Of course, in the Boxster's case that doesn't mean much as there's only so much you can do with its basic mid-engine, two-passenger layout.
This prototype was caught just outside the Nurburgring with a few extra body panels bolted on, but it's hard to tell what what's permanent and what's merely disguise. Expect to see this car in production form in roughly two years time.
It feels like we've been waiting too long for the 2010 Audi RS5 to arrive. First spotted in prototype form last summer, the high-powered coupe was expected to debut in Geneva.
Instead, we got the RS version of the TT. Not a bad placeholder, but hardly the big-displacement coupe we were hoping to see. These new spy photos prove there's definitely an RS5 on the way, however, so it shouldn't be long before Audi unleashes the V10-powered coupe.
This latest prototype shows off some revised bodywork in back, but the wheels certainly aren't new. Expect to see something a little more exotic at each corner when the production version debuts later this summer.
For reasons of personal safety and also convenience we cannot tell you where we shot these spy photos, which was at GM's Milford Proving Grounds two days ago at about 9:17 am.
Anyway, our crack shooters got two clean shots of GM's answer to the Aptera 2e two-seat, three-wheel electric vehicle.
Unlike the Aptera, the GM vehicle, known by its codename "Monte Rickshaw," uses one small front wheel which is connected to the passenger cabin/trunk by a long tube. GM is known to have been researching what's known as Chevrolet Advanced Caster Application, or CACA, which allows the front wheel to spin a full 360 degrees and chatter annoyingly in grocery-store parking lots.
The tube is assumed to be packed, flashlight-style with alkaline batteries or, possibly, magic. Steering is thought to be by something called "helper monkey."
Our sources indicate that: A. The vehicle will arrive in dealerships with the throwback Monte Carlo Style rear seen here with the up-to-the-minute matte black paint job. Or, B. Could this be the next Corvette?!
We've shown you various spy photos and spy videos of this car over the past couple of years, and now it has an official name: the 2011 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG.
Hidden under Viper body panels during its early testing days, the latest prototypes are still covered in camouflage but there's no mistaking the gullwing-style doors and retro bodywork. Yep, this is a modern day 300 SL alright.
We were expecting AMG to unleash a monster of an engine for this exclusive super coupe and we were wrong.
We noticed this crude little sport ute parked on a residential street in Santa Monica over the weekend. Given its manufacturer license plate and lack of badges we figured it was some sort of test mule. Then again, it looks like a production vehicle, albeit one that we can't identify.
Hmm...probably not the way the BMW X 1 engineers planned it back in Munich. Oh well, once you've augured yourself into a snow bank in the middle of nowhere there aren't too many options.
In this case, a call to the Volkwagen Tiguan that was along for comparison was all it took to get the new BMW sport utility free. I'm sure there's a joke in there about Xdrive versus 4Motion, but we'll leave that up to you.
The surprise announcement that the Chevrolet Orlando concept would go into production in 2011 didn't get much attention at the Detroit Auto Show. Maybe these spy photos of the Chevrolet Cruze-based crossover will help out the cause.
Judging by this prototype, the 2012 Chevrolet Orlando will come to market with very few changes. Slightly larger side mirrors and a taller overall greenhouse are the most obvious differences. There was a turbo diesel four-cylinder engine under the hood of the concept, but we're expecting to see GM's Ecotec gas engines powering the U.S.-bound models.
Remember all those cool Saab concept vehicles that were rolled out at various auto shows over the past few years? They had a common design theme that was cool looking, yet hard to envision on a real production car, especially a sedan.
Well, it appears as though the time has come for a production application of that design and the 2011 Saab 9-5 appears to be the chosen vehicle. These shots of a 9-5 prototype taken recently in Scandinavia reveal the new shape and it's no small step.
Note how the upright windshield drops off into a steeply raked roofline similar to the concepts. The theme continues all the way back as the rear window is stretched way out until it comes to an end at the very slim looking rear end. Saab sedans have traditionally used an upright windshield and steeply sloped roofline to define their shape, but this looks like a more extreme application of the design, one that might actually get the 9-5 noticed.
Remember the Mini Crossover concept shown at the 2008 Paris Auto Show? Well, here it is as a full blown production prototype. Caught during cold weather testing in Scandinavia, this test mule gives a pretty clear look at the final design.
A slightly larger, more utilitarian Mini, the Crossover will offer the same lineup of engines as the current Cooper. It will debut with front wheel drive only, but an all-wheel drive will be added later.
According to Wolfgang Armbrecht, head of Mini brand management, the Crossover in Cooper trim with front-wheel drive will start just above the base price for a Cooper S convertible: around $29,000. A Cooper S four-wheel-drive Crossover should be priced at or above $34,000. Since style and functionality are more the point than sportiness, there will be no John Cooper Works edition of the Crossover.
A final production model will be shown at the 2009 Frankfurt Auto Show in September, so expect U.S. sales early next year.
Acura told dealers recently that an upcoming crossover vehicle is still on track for a late 2009 debut according to a report in Automotive News. The new vehicle is part of Acura's strategy to become a "Tier 1" luxury brand. In other words, it wants to compete directly with BMW, Lexus and Mercedes-Benz.
Spy photos of the new Acura crossover show a sleek design that clearly favors style over utility. With the MDX already taking care of the larger three-row segment of market, it looks as though Acura is gunning for buyers who might otherwise go for something like the BMW X6 or Infiniti FX. Both are niche players, so consider this new crossover a small part of Acura's grander strategy to attain Tier 1 status.
Remember the Jaguar XJ? Yes, it still exists. In fact, Jaguar sold 2,455 of them last year. Not bad considering that it has a design that looked dated the day it went on sale in 2003.
The 2011 Jaguar XJ shouldn't have that problem. Underneath all that camouflage, the new XJ appears to have a much different and more unique looking design. You can see a few elements of the new XF in there, but the car is obviously stretched out a little longer which should keep it from looking like a Lexus. Video after the jump.
Well, we don't know if this car will ever see showrooms given GM's current cash crunch, but it appears as though development work is still moving along on the Chevrolet Camaro convertible. These shots were posted on the Australian website www.drive.com.au, hence the rather odd bumper stickers indicating its status as a left hooker. Looks like GM did a decent job on the soft top, no?
If Honda's internal focus groups didn't already conclude there's a need for an Accord wagon, this hapless L.A. resident is proof positive that an Accord wagon would be a welcome addition to the Honda lineup.
Even without such obvious examples of need, Honda was already hard at work on a new Accord-based crossover. A U.S. patent application was approved two weeks ago complete with sketches of what looks like an Accord wagon.
And then just last week, Temple of VTEC secured some clear spy photos of a more utilitarian-looking Accord wagon. It's a dead ringer for the production model and far better looking that the Toyota Venza. Expect to see it on sale as early as the fourth quarter of 2009.
Much like Death Valley in August, January in the Arctic Circle is prime time prototype testing season. First we saw the Porsche 911, then the Mercedes-Benz CLS, and now the 2012 Porsche Boxster has hit the streets.
Does it look any different? Not really, but there's some speculation that this Boxster could usher in a new engine configuration that would help Porsche meet the more stringent U.S. fuel economy standards looming in its future.
Deep in the land of hideous prototypes, otherwise known as the Arctic Circle, our chilled-to-the-bone photographers caught this 2011 Mercedes-Benz CLS out for a test drive. As is customary now for German prototypes, this test mule was clad in all sorts of hard plastic which covers up the vast majority of the actual sheetmetal.
Strangely enough, they didn't see fit to mask off this prototype's roofline, which seems a bit odd given the fact that this is the defining trait of the CLS. Compared to the roofline of the current model, not much has changed. The shape of the C-pillar looks exactly the same, so expect to see most of this sedan's upgrades in the design of the nose and tail sections.
Based on the same chassis as the recently introduced 2010 Mercedes-Benz E-Class, this CLS will most likely retain the same 5.5-liter V8 as its base engine with an AMG upgrade available on the top end.
With sales of the latest 997 under way, development of the 2011 Porsche 911 is moving right along. These 998 prototypes were spotted recently during some late night cold-weather testing in the Arctic Circle.
Like every other 911 prototype spotted over the last four decades, these test mules look much like their predecessors. The only noticeable change? The location of the side mirrors. Current models have them mounted to the bottom of the A-pillars while these prototypes have them on the doors.
The exhaust tips and wheel designs are slightly different too, but that's to be expected. Oh, and those "air intakes" on the rear fenders appear to be nothing more than stickers. Expect to see about a thousand more 911 prototypes before it finally goes on sale in early 2011.
An alert Edmunds employee caught this 2011 BMW 5 Series prototype on the streets of L.A. recently. Like most of the 5 Series prototypes we've seen before, this car was covered nose to tail in camouflage so there's not much to see.
If anything, these shots give some impression of the car's overall size and stance thanks to the various cars surrounding the prototype. We're not expecting anything dramatic with this new 5 Series, so the fact that it blended in quite easily is no surprise.
With the horsepower wars seemingly coming to an end, this could be one of BMW's most concerted efforts yet to show off its much talked about "Efficient Dynamics" idea. Don't expect to see a two-mode hybrid drivetrain in this car, but we've heard rumors of a few other groundbreaking technologies that could make their world debut in this upcoming sedan. Expect to see an official debut sometime in 2010.
In a surprise announcement on everybody's favorite fluffy news program, Vice President of Global Design Ed Welburn told the Today's Show's Matt Lauer that GM would bring a production version of the Chevrolet Beat to the Detroit Auto Show. He even did the now trademarked "GM executive sheet lift" which revealed the nose of the subcompact hatchback. Welburn divulged no details, but we're guessing it will be fuel efficient, inexpensive and, of course, a "surprise".
The 3 Series refresh is out and the 2009 7 Series is on its way, so the 2011 BMW 5 Series is the next logical step in the automaker's product plan. We've seen various 5-Series sedan prototypes before, but this is the best look yet at the wagon.
There's nothing unexpectedly different about the shape. It follows the same path it always has with nicely rounded D-pillars and relatively thin C-pillars which keep it from looking too bulky.
In profile, it appears as though this 5 Series will have some fairly spacious rear seats. The roof looks tall and the doors appear larger than usual. We know that BMW is also working on what it calls its Progressive Activity Sedan which takes the tall-roof idea to the extreme, so it's possible that some of the same thinking has been incorporated into the 5 Series wagon.
Don't expect to see the final product for quite some time. The 2011 BMW 5 Series is still at least a year away from an official unveil, so this wagon may not show up until late 2010.
So was that blurry cell phone shot of the 2010 Ford Taurus that surfaced earlier this year the real thing? Well, after catching this 2010 Ford Taurus prototype on the streets of Dearborn it would appear as though it was indeed quite genuine.
The redesigned sedan will get a sleeker shape and a slightly less chrome-laden grille. A slightly rising beltline gives it a more aggressive stance while the rear end is finished with a pair of nicely integrated taillights. This is the first time we've seen the interior and it looks like a solid step up from the current model. Nothing ground breaking, but plenty of wood trim and some decent looking leather. We'll have pictures of the finished product after it debuts at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show in January.
Talk about boosting your "street cred" among sports car fans! That's just what happened to the tiny upstart Tesla electric sports car company. It turns out that Porsche is on the waiting list to get one, presumably so they can tear it apart to see what makes it tick.
For Mazda3 fans, the upcoming LA show is both good news and bad news. The good is that the all-new Mazda3 will debut. The bad news is the all-new Mazdaspeed3 will be MIA.
Not sure exactly when the new Speed3 will debut (could be next year?), so in the meantime some teaser spy photos will just have to do.
Set to debut at the LA auto show, images of a lightly camouflaged Nissan 370Z have been posted up on the Net. While similar in look to the current 350Z, closer examination indicates a more substantial change from that model. The fenders seem to be much more pronounced and the roof appears to have a more severe rake to it.
A sharp-eyed movie buff in California has caught what looks like a production version of the 2011 Chevrolet Volt on the set of Transformers 2. Although some elements of this movie car have been altered like the extra large badges and oversized wheels, most of the sheetmetal matches up with the teaser shots that have been released by GM. It's a far cry from the concept, but this Volt still has a distinctive shape unlike anything else in the Chevrolet lineup.
Not that the Audi S5 isn't fastest enough, but another 100 horsepower or so might make it the best coupe on the planet. Looks like we'll get our wish soon enough as spy photographers caught what looks to be an Audi RS5 testing in Death Valley.
It has a more aggressive front end and a larger set of 265/35ZR19 tires too. The signature oval exhaust tips aren't there, but that's probably just a temporary attempt to confuse onlookers. Our hope is that those exhaust pipes are connected to the same 580-hp V10 found in the RS6 sedan. Expect to hear an official announcement by the end of the year.
We got a pretty good look at the 2010 Cadillac SRX just a few months ago, but these latest spy shots from Michigan show even more detail. The Cadillac styling cues up front are unmistakable while the profile mimics the Provoq concept as we expected. The rear end gets a pair of tall, vertical taillights and a relatively small window. Look for the official debut of the 2010 Cadillac SRX at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.
The last time we saw the 2010 Chevrolet Equinox, it was wearing enough camouflage to cover up all the details. This time, the covers were almost completely off when our spy photographers caught it testing at GM's Milford Proving grounds. No surprisingly, it looks much like the 2010 GMC Terrain we caught in Death Valley last week. Both SUVs should arrive in 2009.
An all-new 2010 Acura crossover is in the works, and our spy shooters in Death Valley spent the better part of the night getting the first spy shots. Slated to slot in above the MDX in the lineup, the new crossover is aiming to compete with the Infiniti FX and BMW X5. It will ride on the same all-wheel drive platform as the upcoming TL sedan, so expect to see similar hardware under the hood. With the launch of the TL still to come, don't expect to see this new crossover until late next year at the earliest.
We knew there was a diesel version of the 2009 Ford F-150 in the works, and now we have the photos to prove it. Caught while testing in Death Valley, this F-150 Diesel prototype didn't try to conceal its identity. Under the hood, a Powerstroke-labeled engine cover makes it pretty clear that Ford will carry over its brand name from the heavy-duty diesel engine. Closer inspection also revealed a clearly visible additive inlet for the fluid used to clean up the exhaust. Expect to see the 2010 Ford F-150 Diesel on sale by the end of next year.
After the first round of pseudo spy photos courtesy of Mercedes-Benz, we can now show you some real spy photos of the 2009 McLaren SLR Speedster in action on the Nurburgring. This is the last variation of the SLR that we'll see as the less-than-successful supercar will go out of production soon. Lighter than any of the previous SLRs, the Speedster should be the fastest and most nimble version yet. Its top speed is said to be over 200mph, bring your helmet.
If you're wondering what the 2009 Honda Ridgeline is going to look like, here's your answer. Caught during hot weather testing in Death Valley, this Ridgeline prototype had so little camouflage that we suspect its official unveil is imminent.
Other than the Pilot front end, we don't expect many changes for the unibody pickup. It will most likely get the same engine upgrades found in the Pilot, so expect a V6 with 250 horsepower and 253 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed automatic will feed a full-time all-wheel drive system. Expect to see the 2009 Honda Ridgeline at dealers this fall.
The Z28 is another casualty of the escalating fuel prices. So Chevy fans, here's what you'll be missing:
A 6.2L, small block V8 with a roots-style supercharger that reportedly was to put out 500 to 550 horsepower. So with the Z28 now a no-show, the SS model will be the Max-Camaro. In that guise, you'll find a LS3 V8 with around 400 to 450 hp.Full story here.
Although many rumors suggest that this Audi test mule is an early look at the A5 Sportback, we don't find it quite that conclusive. For one, the wheelbase looks unchanged from the current A6 which at 11.9-inches is over three inches longer than the wheelbase of the A5. Given that the current A6 rides on Volkswagen's C6 platform, it seems doubtful that a new model, even one that's like to be longer than the A5, would use an older platform. Then consider the increased ride height and 20-inch Q7 wheels it's riding on, not exactly what you would expect from a hatchback version of the A5.
No this is not a Volkswagen Tiguan. It's actually a prototype for the upcoming 2010 BMW X1 sport utility. Up to this point, all X1 test mules were covered in hard plastic which concealed most of its styling details. Although this lovely new paint job makes it hard to pin down the X1's exact shape, its size and styling is more evident than ever.
Slated to fit below the X3 in BMW's lineup, the X1 has been confirmed for production at the company's Leitzpig plant that currently builds the 1 Series lineup. With that in mind, it's not much of a stretch to figure that the X1 will use the same pair of 3.0-liter straight sixes as the 128i and 135i coupes and convertibles. Expect production to see this new compact SUV on sale in the U.S. by late 2009.
The 2009 BMW 335d was announced at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, so the fact that our spies caught a nearly undisguised prototype testing in Death Valley was no surprise. Set for a fall debut, the 335d will not only showcase BMW's latest diesel technology, it will arrive wearing slightly revised bodywork as well. In fact, all 2009 BMW 3 Series models will get a mid-cycle refresh this fall which will include revised front and rear fascias and modestly upgraded interiors. Although the success of the 3 Series as a model line is virtually guaranteed, the 335d may have a tough time finding traction given the price of diesel fuel. We'll see in a matter of months.
A new SUV has hit the Nurburgring and its causing quite a stir. With its Cayenne bodywork it appears to be a smaller, compact version of Porsches SUV. Were not so sure, however, as Porsche has said repeatedly that its not interesting in going into cheaper segments of the SUV market.
Anyone got a hankering to be an auto spy photographer? There is a new job slot open, now that Hans Lehmann is calling it a day; or perhaps better put, calling it a "career."
Lehmann, along with another super sleuth Jim Dunne who also recently retired, were the bane of the auto industry for decades, snapping images and feeding them to news outlets well before the vehicles were to be released. In fact thanks to Lehmann, Dunne (and Brenda Priddy, etc.), the auto companies spent tons of time, energy and money doing everything in their powers to hide these vehicles in any way they could from these folks.
The 2009 Chevrolet Camaro has arrived at the Nurburgring. These pictures were just shot at the famous German test track, so expect to see video of it burning up the Nordschleife shortly. Note the Brembo calipers up front. Could this be the often rumored SS version?..
It looks like it wont be long before the 2010 Cadillac CTC hits the road. These shots taken recently in Michigan reveal some very production looking bodywork. From the detailed grille to the quarterpanel vents, this looks more like an early prototype than a test mule. As we reported months ago, the 2010 Cadillac CTS coupe will go into production in the spring of 2009...
We’ve seen the Mazda 6 that the rest of the world will get before, now the check out the 2009 Mazda 6 that’s headed for the U.S. Caught during a logistical swap in the Detroit area, this Mazda 6 looks like a full production spec model right down to its odd looking headlights. The rear end isn’t so bad, although it looks as though it uses a pair of exhaust “covers” like the Lexus IS-F. Hopefully we’re wrong on that one...
Heres what we know about this interesting looking prototype caught recently in the Arctic Circle. Its a Lotus, its code named Eagle and it wasnt supposed to happen. Lotus was planning on building its replacement for the Esprit next, but during one of its recent management shuffles, it was determined that the plans for the Esprit werent realistic. With that in mind, this 2+2 was commissioned to get something in the works while the plans for the Esprit were completely reworked...
After the reveal of the Audi RS6 Avant, we figured it was only a matter of time before the sedan version would show up. Good thing it has too, as the chances of us getting the Avant in the U.S. are slim. Now that the existence of the RS6 sedan has been confirmed, expect to see it either late this year or in early 2009...
Images of a lightly disguised 2009 Infiniti FX are up on the Net. The vehicle is to be introduced at the Geneva auto show next month.
The vehicle is slightly longer than the current model, and like the Nisaan Murano, is clearly is an evolutionary step in terms of design. It's believed that the base model will get the larger 3.7L V6, and will be called the FX37...
It has been long known that VW would love to have a piece of the pickup market, and now we have a couple of spy shots of said truck.
What's surprising is that this may not be a pure VW effort, but rather a re-badged Toyota Hilux pickup. Apparently this is not the first time VW has colaberated with Toyota, as they did this back in the '80s as well.
It’s been rumored for years, but these are the first conclusive spy photos of the smaller Rolls Royce sedan codenamed RR4. Tucked in between a couple next-generation BMW 7 Series mules, the RR4 prototype has a unique front fascia that is clearly influenced by the larger Phantom sedan. When the mule pulled out for a test drive, its overall size suggested that it was riding on the same chassis as its 7 Series companions. At the 2008 Detroit Auto Show, Rolls Royce CEO Ian Robertson confirmed that the RR4 will go on sale in 2010 and feature a newly developed engine.
We’ve seen spy photos of what looked like the 2010 Mini Crossman before, but these latest shots confirm the existence of its all-wheel drive hardware. The engineers in this prototype didn’t seem to mind the attention as our spy shooters were able to snap multiple angles of Mini’s upcoming soft-roader. Although adding all-wheel drive and a new suspension doesn’t seem like a major undertaking, we’re not expecting to see this Mini start production until 2010.
Are the rumors true? Is Lincoln preparing its own version of the 2009 Ford Flex? This mule recently spotted in Detroit seems to indicate that a Lincoln crossover is in the works. Obviously none of the sheetmetal on this test mule is headed for production, but that big waterfall grille is all Lincoln...
Caught heading to the Arctic Circle for some cold weather testing, these spy photos of the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro test mules reveal some interesting new details about the upcoming coupe. Click through for a closer look.
Its been all of two days since we posted the first spy photos of the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro, and now another spy shot has hit the web. This time it was posted on the Camaro fan site known as Camaro5.com. No details were provided with the photo, so where and when it was snapped is anybodys guess.
Finally, after endless hype surrounding the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro, we finally have some good spy photos of a couiple test mules. This group of Camaro prototypes was spotted just outside Melbourne, Australia. They were accompanied by a couple Mustangs as well, so GM obviously knows what market niche it needs to hit. The 2009 Chevrolet Camaro will go on sale in early 2009 followed by a Camaro Convertible in later 2009...
These are the first shots of the 2010 Mazda RX-8. Obviously this test mule isnt all that different from the current RX-8, but it appears as though a new front end is on the way at the very least. Were not expecting big changes for Mazdas rotary-powered sportscar, so the minimal camouflage isnt much of a surprise. Mazda's designers are currently working on a new face of Mazda which will be applied across the lineup starting with the 2009 Mazda 3...
After snagging numerous spy photos and videos over the last year, we finally got our hands on these pictures of the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V completely uncovered. They reveal a completely revised front end, well integrated hood bulge and a set of massive rotors that look more than capable of hauling it all to a stop. We won’t get the rest of the details until the 2008 Detroit Auto Show in January, but these spy shots should hold you over for now.
There’s either a very fake grille on the front end of this test mule, or this is the next-generation 2010 Buick LaCrosse. Caught testing under some very close supervision according to our spy shooters, this prototype gives a few hints to the styling direction of Buick’s midsize sedan. The Enclave-like front end is pretty obvious, but the rear window line and overall greenhouse are a little harder to make out. This vehicle is expected to ride on GM’s new global midsize platform which means the continuation of front wheel drive...
Looks like the upcoming facelift for the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SL is almost complete. Our spy shooters caught this prototype with virtually no disguise although they do admit to removing a few pieces of black tape with some help from Photoshop. As expected, this SL will get a few minor styling changes up front like new lights, a one bar grille and a more aggressive air dam. The quarter panel vents now look like those used on the SLR supercar while the rear end gets a slightly revised lower valance...
Inside Line was lucky to get a couple of images of the new 2009 F-150 caught in testing. As you can see, the exterior changes fall into the facelift category, rather than full makeover. Will this be enough to keep the competition at bay?
We’re not sure what to make of these latest spy shots. Spy photographers in Germany caught these pics of what looks like an Audi A4-based Allroad. With its raised ride height, knobby tires and black fenders, all the signs are there. The only problem is the sedan bodystyle as the Allroad was offered as a wagon only...
These spy photos reveal what looks to be the upcoming Cadillac BRX crossover. Smaller than the SRX, the BRX is expected to ride on the stretched version of GM’s Theta platform that currently underpins the Saturn Vue. In fact, a Vue was spotted along side the BRX prototype before both vehicles headed for cover. A combination of four-cylinder and V6 engines will be offered in the BRX as well as front- and all-wheel drive. Cadillac plans to position the BRX as an entry-level model that will compete against other luxury crossovers like the Acura RDX, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLK. Expect to see the 2010 Cadillac BRX in showrooms by 2009.
Looks like the Hyundai enthusiasts over at www.newtiburon.com have acquired some photos of what looks like the production version of the Hyundai Genesis coupe. The concept version will be shown next week at the 2007 Los Angeles Auto Show, but who cares about the concept when you can see the real thing?
According to the post, the information and photos were gleaned from a marketing presentation several months ago which seems plausible given the Mustang coupe on hand for comparison. They were told there would be two engines: a 2.0-liter 215hp turbo four-cylinder and a 300hp 3.8-liter V6...
This isn’t the actual 2009 Volkswagen Scirocco, but it pretty close. Based on the same prototypes shown in our latest Scirocco spy video, this illustration reveals just how close the production Scirocco will come to the Iroc concept. It looks pretty good, but don’t expect to see it in the U.S. anytime soon...
It’s set for an official debut in about two weeks at the L.A. auto show, but here’s an early peek at the 2009 Nissan Murano. We weren’t expecting big changes from Nissan’s midsize crossover and this prototype doesn’t appear that far removed from the current model. The overall shape and size is the same as the current model and even the wheels look familiar...
Nissan is back at the Nurburgring this week with the 2009 GT-R, and according to our shooters on the scene the engineers are once again aiming for new lap records. We heard the initial goal was to beat the current 911 Turbo, but now they're aiming even higher.
While the Turbo laps the Nordschleife in 7:40, the Porsche Carrera GT has reportedly done it in just 7:28 at hands of Walter Roehl. Nissan is supposedly gunning for the GT, but they'll need a perfect lap to beat that time...
Looks like yet another model in the Mercedes-Benz lineup is getting the Black Series treatment from AMG. This prototype of the Mercedes-Benz SL 63 Black Series was recently spotted at the Nurburgring and it looks every bit as aggressive as its current CLK counterpart. Huge fender flares add a good 10 to 12 inches of width to the car which clears the way for a monster set of wheels and tires. The brake calipers appear slightly different than those on the current SL 55/65 too...
There were plenty of enthusiasts who scoffed when Nissan's engineers started dragging a 911 Turbo around with them while testing the 2009 GT-R. It seemed like a lofty benchmark for a car that's expected to cost around $75,000, but the latest word from Germany suggests Nissan may have met its goals.
Prototypes of the 2009 GT-R started circling the Nurburgring yesterday, and according to spy shooters on the scene it was clear that the GT-R was running at full steam. With that in mind, they pulled out their stop watches to get an idea just how fast the GT-R was getting around the Nordschleife...
An appearance on the Nurburgring seems almost required for new models these days, so it was no surprise when these pictures of the 2009 Subaru Impreza WRX STI surfaced recently. Wearing minimal disguise this STI clearly shows what's in store for the top-of-the-line Impreza. Wider wheel flares, a deeper front air dam, quad exhaust pipes and a sizable rear wing are the most noticeable changes. More power, bigger brakes and a retuned suspension are also on the upgrade list...
This test mule doesn't look like much, but the spy photographers who shot it claim that under that Lumina SS sheetmetal sits the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro. There's no way to verify their claim, but there are some odd elements to this prototype worth noting. Notice how the rear doors aren't really doors at all, and those exhaust pipes don't exactly look stock either. We aren't expecting the production version of the Camaro for quite some time, early 2009 is the expected start of production, so the fact that test mules would still be in such early stages of development is entirely plausible...
These are the latest shots of what may very well be called the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1. It could be the Corvette SS or the Corvette Z07 too, but regardless of what it's called, the new super Corvette is guaranteed to be one of the fastest production cars on the road. Powered by a supercharged 6.2-liter V8, the upcoming Corvette is expected to generate 625-650 horsepower. That kind of power will not only give it bragging rights over the latest Viper, it should be enough for a top speed over 200mph...
Winding Road has posted what they think to be images of a 2009 Forester test mule. Perhaps better stated, Brenda Priddy & Company who took he pictures, thinks this is the new Forester—but here's where it gets interesting...
These images are old, perhaps 6 months or older, and Priddy never thought much of them—until now. For some reason, Priddy & Company are now convinced this is the new Forester wrapped in Outback trappings...
Looks like the 2009 Porsche 911 Turbo is getting a little touch up. This prototype spotted in Germany looks like the current model, but we noticed a few minor changes that indicate an imminent midcycle refresh. The front end is unmolested as far as we can tell, but the rear end has new taillights with LEDs and a slightly different lens arrangement. Reshaped tailpipes indicate a reworked exhaust, so there could be a few extra horsepower on tap for a car that's already one of the fastest we've ever tested...
With the 2009 Jaguar XF sedan officially out of the bag, we can now turn our attention to the upcoming Jaguar XF-R, a top-of-the-line sports model that will sit above the supercharged version of the standard model. Test mules spotted recently in Death Valley may have been wearing S-Type bodywork, but the XF nose job suggests these prototypes were testing a new engine configuration. Most rumors point toward a supercharged V8 with a larger displacement than the 4.2-liter engine used in the standard XF. That engine produces 420 horsepower, so expect at least 500 from the upgraded motor...
BMW has been pretty adamant about not making a Motorsport version of the X5. As far as it's concerned, an SUV is not the proper basis for an "M" vehicle. That hasn't stopped the German company from making hopped up versions of previous models, however, and the next high performance X5 looks as though it could be the fastest one yet.
We've heard rumors of V10 power, and this prototype appears to confirm them...
Inside Line has obtained these spy shots of a new, uprated version of the Aston Martin V8 Vantage. Developed to complement the standard Vantage, the new model will feature upgrades to the suspension, brakes and engine. Expect better breathing and a new ECU to deliver improved throttle response with more power and torque.
Comparisons with the Porsche 911 GT3 are obvious, but Aston insiders insist the new car will not be as radical as its German rival...
Is the Audi A3 Cabriolet headed for the U.S.? Well, this prototype was spotted testing in Arizona, but that doesn't mean it's a done deal just yet. We've heard there's a good chance that this soft top A3 will make its way into U.S. dealerships, so if you like the way it looks you should be able to pick one up next year for around $30K...
These are the first spy photos of what looks like the 2009 Volkswagen Passat coupe. Yes, this prototype clearly has four doors, but this is a "coupe" the same way a Mercedes-Benz CLS is a coupe. Volkswagen intends to position this low slung sedan as a step up from the traditional Passat, so expect a more luxurious interior and a price tag that will push well past $40K. Sales are expected to start in the U.S...
GM says it's moving away from badge engineering, but with sales of its latest crossovers going so well it just couldn't help itself one last time. These latest spy photos shot in Las Vegas appear to show the 2009 Chevrolet Traverse, the bow tie brand's version of the Buick Enclave/GMC Acadia/Saturn Outlook triplets. Although no badging is visible, this test mule looks like it has Chevrolet's trademark grille design and an overall shape similar to its Lambda platform siblings. Expect to see this new Chevrolet crossover in showrooms by the fall of 2008.
After months of seeing the 2009 Jaguar XF sedan covered in camouflage, we can finally bring you the first shots of an almost completely uncovered production model. The rear end looks much like the C-XF concept and features "Jaguar" script on the trunklid, a "leaper" above the lettering and a pair of nicely integrated tail pipes. As we expected, vents in the front quarter panels mimic the current XJ sedan and XK coupe. The wheel design is new -- and not particularly very attractive...
There have already been teaser shots of the 2009 Kia Mesa, but these latest spy photos from Death Valley reveal even more of the big SUV. There's nothing very dramatic about the styling, which is a shame as we really liked the Mesa concept from a couple years ago. One important piece of hardware worth noting is the independent rear suspension. It should open up plenty of space in the back of this three-row SUV giving it true seven- or even eight-passenger capacity...
These are the latest and greatest shots of the 2009 Dodge Challenger. Caught roaming the streets of suburban Detroit, this prototype wears the usual front and rear camouflage along with a set of blacked out, five spoke wheels. A small peek through the front end cover shows a set of headlights that look very similar to those used on the concept. It also looks as though the B-pillars shown in previous shots of the Challenger's body shell are in fact headed for production...
Most speculation has pegged this prototype (top) as the 2009 Lexus RX350. After closer inspection and a chance encounter with yet another Lexus prototype, we think it's the 2009 Lexus JX 350/460.
You obviously shouldn't put much stock into the sheetmetal of this Mercedes-Benz SLC prototype, but judging by the hardware, performance is a priority for this two-seater. Stalked by spy photographers for two days now, the wraps finally came off this afternoon revealing some Dodge Viper bodywork, a set of massive slotted brake rotors and an incredibly long wheelbase. Some handiwork the night before by KGP yielded a 106 inch measurement from wheel to wheel. The true identity of this Mercedes-built supercar is still in question, but whatever it is will be big and fast for sure...
Looks like Hyundai's upcoming replacement for the Tiburon has finally made it to the California desert for hot weather testing. The first spy photos of this new Hyundai coupe showed up months ago, but since then we haven't seen much on this sharp looking two-door. We do know that it will use the BH platform that underpins the Genesis luxury sedan, so the switch to rear wheel drive is certain. Although the Genesis sedan will have an optional V8, we've been told that the top engine on the coupe will be the sedan's base 3.8-liter V6...
Honda has a reputation among spy photographers for being overly cautious when it comes to test mules. Sure, it will let a bunch of Accords run free a few months before launch, but when it's early in the development cycle, Honda goes to great lengths to keep its prototypes out of the public eye. One common tactic is night testing which may seem to defeat the purpose of being in the desert, but even at midnight temperatures in Death Valley can remain well into triple digits.
The cover of darkness didn't deter KGP photography, however, as they managed to snag this photo of the 2009 Honda Pilot on a late night test run...
These are the first pictures of what appears to be the 2010 Volkswagen Rabbit. It doesn't appear substantially different from the current Volkswagen Rabbit, but it shouldn't as it's based on the same platform. A slight increase in size is expected and we'll probably see some updated engines too by the time it makes its way to the U.S. Although we expect to see this go on sale as the Golf in Europe by 2009, U.S...
This is either a stripped down Lancer Evolution, or the often talked about but never seen 2008 Lancer Ralliart. Forget about the old Ralliart that offered nothing more than a body kit and wheels, this next generation version is expected to get AWD and a turbocharged four-cylinder with roughly 220hp-230hp -- you know, like a certain other Japanese sedan, er hatchback. Add in the Lancer's tasteful styling and nicely trimmed interior, not to mention options like navigation, a 30G hard drive and Bluetooth, and it's not looking good for the WRX.
We've seen interior spy shots of the 2009 Hyundai Genesis sedan before, but our latest pic shows the first evidence of an iDrive-like device for Hyundai's luxury sedan. From what we can tell, the system is actually closer to Audi's MMI system with hard buttons surrounding the main control knob. This is good news as Audi's system has proven far easier to use than BMW's clumsy setup. The rest of the interior appears to have a few minor changes, but overall it's a nicely laid out cabin that looks sufficiently upscale to warrant a premium price...
No big surprise here. It looks as though we'll be seeing the debut of the Mercedes-Benz SL63 AMG in the not too distant future. The SL roadster is one of the few remaining models in the lineup that hasn't received AMG's 6.3-liter V8 powerplant, so an upgrade from the current 5.5-liter supercharged engine is only a matter of time. Not much changes on the inside, although the cover over the shifter console got us thinking there might be something going on there too...
We hate to say it, but these latest spy shots appear to show the 2009 BMW X6 in full production trim. Well, maybe not full trim as some of the details are still covered, but enough to see that this BMW could take over "most ridiculed" status from the 7 Series when the SUV goes on sale next year. Not good.
These are the first spy photos of the upcoming Volkswagen Scirocco. Don't get too excited, however, as there are no plans at this time for U.S. sales. The big wigs at the U.S...
Kia showed the spiffy Soul concept (image above) at the New York auto show in 2005. Now there are some spy shots of the production version up on Kiaworld.
Not a whole lot is known about the specifics yet, although he concept car had a 2.0L engine. As to be expected, the production model is a bit more conservative looking...
Those hoping for an all-new F-150 may be disappointed as this appears to be more of a mid-life facelift. That being said it sounds like the changes will be rather significant, so let's call it a "major" facelift, okay?
From what we know, the SuperCrew will get a larger bed, and the cab itself will be larger; think Tundra CrewMax in size. On the diesel front, it sounds like the F-150 may not get the 330 hp 4.4L V8 diesel until perhaps 2011. Also delayed is the the "Boss" 6.2L V8...
We were hoping that the 2010 Porsche Panamera would get better looking as the camouflage came off, but as these latest spy photos from Germany show, the new Porsche sedan is still a gangly mess of odd curves and strange proportions. The front doesn't look bad, but the Panamera's profile still looks like a 911 with a couple feet of bodywork added in the middle. These are the first spy photos to show the rear window line and it's not helping matters much. From the rear, you can clearly see that this new sedan will actually have a sizable hatchback...
Inside Line has some spy shots of the upcoming BMW X6 SUV/CUV/SAV thingy.
Whatever they call it, it sure looks like a "hatchback" to me, and not a "wagonback." The forward slope of the rear gate is far too severe to be considered to be anything other than a hatchback. It may look neat, once the cladding is removed, but surely the cargo hauling capacity will be seriously compromised by the rear-end styling.
Maybe what we have here is a new class of vehicle being introduced, not unlike that of the 4-door coupe that Mercedes introduced with the CLS?
Honda is giving the Odyssey a slight nip-and-tuck for 2008. There's a new grille, hood, front bumper and revised taillights. No word yet as to whether there have been any mechanical or interior upgrades.
You may have seen the carefully orchestrated press photos of the 2008 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X, but these are the first spy photos of the same car on the street sans camouflage. Taken as the car was making some hot laps on the Nurburgring test track, this prototype doesnt reveal anything new. It still has the nicely chiseled features that give it a more aggressive look than its main rival -- the 2009 Subaru WRX STI. Look for the debut of both vehicles at the Tokyo auto show in Oct...
Here are the first spy photos of the 2009 Subaru WRX STI. Caught lapping at the Nurburgring test track in Germany, this STI prototype reveals some of the subtle changes in store for this top-of-the-line Subaru WRX. Up front, a mesh grille replaces the egg crate design on the standard WRX while the deeper front air dam has ditched its fog lights and been given a larger center air intake.
In back, there's a bigger spoiler of course, but the STI also gets a
tough looking set of quad tailpipes...
Inside Line has posted some images and info on the upcoming '09 Toyota Sequoia. Not surprisingly, the vehicle looks like a Tundra station wagon. It's supposed to take on the Tahoe, Expedition and Armada, but I can't help but think that they would also like to syphon off a few Suburban customers too, as it looks huge.
Hmmm... I wonder what that small square opening is on the lower left of grille in the bumper is? Might it be a plug for a possible cold weather diesel hook up? (Note: I've seen other spy photos of this vehicle without that small box in the lower bumper grille, which, I think, gives more credence to the diesel theory.)
More spy shots of the all-new Toyota Land Cruiser have shown up on the Net, this time over at Jalopnik. As before, the Land Cruiser is a kissin' cousin of the all-new Lexus LX570. That means expect the same 5.7L V8 found in the Tundra. The vehicle is expected to debut at the Tokyo auto show this fall.
Our latest spy photos from the Nurburgring reveal an interesting bit of information about the 2010 BMW 7 Series. It appears as though the 7 Series will get a twin turbo V8 when it goes on sale in 2009. Two big intercoolers up front are a clear tip off, but we couldn't verify which V8 is sitting behind them. Our best guess at this point?..
Hold the presses! Here are some images of the all-new 2008 Honda Accords, both coupe and sedan!
This apparently was a brochure photo shoot in the forests high in the mountains of Canada, Obviously somewhere that they didn't expect to run into camera-toting spies!
As we've seen before, the coupe sports a honeycomb grille, whereas the sedan has horizontal bars. And based on the wheels and dual exhaust these are all V6 versions.
Honda has publicly talked about more horsepower, better fuel economy, cylinder deactivation and lower emissions for the V6-powered Accord and although there's no word from Honda, we're anticipating a 3.5-liter V6 with about 270-horsepower, as well as the base 180-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder version.
These are the first pictures of what will eventually become the 2010 BMW X3. Yes, it's a long way off, but the current X3 just received its midcycle refresh for 2007, so don't expect the fully redesigned model for at least another few years. Clearly, it will continue to ride on the same platform as the current 3 Series which should mean shared engine and drive systems as well. Obviously, the 3 Series wagon sheetmetal doesn't reveal much about the styling of the next X3, but there are a few differences between this mule and the current X3...
These are the first spy photos of the upcoming 2010 Maserati Spyder. It's based on the recently introduced Gran Turismo coupe and it appears as though the Spyder will switch to a hardtop configuration. We never liked the odd proportions of the previous Spyder, so this revised version should offer a significant improvement in the styling department. The new roof should help it to maintain the GT's lines despite its shorter, two-seat configuration. Expect to see the same 405hp V8 used in the Gran Turismo under the hood of the Spyder when it goes on sale in 2009...
Found this image over at NASIOC. The poster must have found the original over at VW Vortex.
I knew this model was in the works, as an internal SoA '08 Impreza model chart leaked out perhaps a month or more back. When I first heard the news that the Outback Sport was going to return I had somewhat mixed feelings...
We've seen this prototype before. It's the 2009 Hyundai Genesis, or whatever they decide to call it when it goes on sale in the fall of 2008. With rear wheel drive and an optional V8, it will take the Azera's place at the top of Hyundai's lineup. Previous prototypes had a very Korean looking front end with a massive grille highlighted by vertical chrome bars...
Inside Line has a couple of spy shots of the facelifted '09 Honda Ridgeline. From what we can see, there's nothing here to get terribly excited about. Hopefully there are some more significant changes under the skin. The all-new Gen-2 Ridgeline won't arrive until 2011...
Boy, do you think they could have added any more camo? This spy shot was taken by a quick-thinking NASIOC member today in LA. At a quick glance one could assume this might be the next Subaru Impreza STI. What's clear is the big wing lives on, or at least they want you to think so...
This is it, the first engine shot of the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V. Unfortunately, it's not a very good one as it doesn't actually show the engine. What it does show is a very suspicious looking cover over what many suspect is a supercharged LS3 V8. We still think it's nothing more than the 505hp LS7 from the current Z06 and there's nothing conclusive enough in this photo to prove otherwise...
It's not official just yet, but the 2009 BMW 1 Series coupe is starting to make appearances throughout Germany with little camouflage. Witness the latest sighting at the Nurburgring where legendary driver Hans-Joachim Stuck made a few laps in the new entry-level coupe. Photographers on the scene said the hot laps were part of an advertising shoot, so the official launch can't be too far off.
After seeing various exterior spy photos of the 2009 Lincoln MKS, we can now bring you the first clear interior shots of Lincoln's upcoming sedan flagship. So how does the real cabin compare with the setup shown in the MKS concept? It's surprisingly close. Sure, the colors and textures are a little different, but from the gauges to the steering wheel almost all of the original design elements are there...
The Japanese car maker Nissan is preparing an all new replacement for the very successful Murano, which has been on the market since 2003 in the United States and then also in Europe since 2004.
These photos are showing for the first time a prototype of its successor, caught during secret testing in Southern Europe. It is a right hand drive car and was accompanied by the just launched Nissan Qashqai. Despite the prototype's disguise one can recognize the new styling of the front engined SUV, which will again be available with front or four wheel drive.
Judging by the advance stage of this test car one can expect the new Murano's launch by the end of next year. One thing I'm happy see here is that it appears that the rear-quarter window will no longer be a huge blind spot—which is a big problem with the current model. More images after the jump.
EDIT: Just got word that this is NOT the new Nissan Murano, but rather a prototype made in co-operation between Nissan, Renault and Samsung and might rather be a Renault Koleos or a Korean version of the Koleos by Samsung.
As prototypes of the 2009 Ford F-150 continue to flood the streets of Dearborn, details on the next-generation truck are slowly leaking out. In our latest round of spy photos, we get the first unobstructed view of the interior along with a new view of the grille.
Unlike some of the earlier test mules that sported Ford's corporate three-bar design up front, this F-150 wore a more traditional grille. It's similar to the current Super Duty trucks and should allow for better cooling for what is expected to be a far more powerful range of V8 engines...
From the looks of these spy photos, the 2008 Ford Explorer Sprt Trac is getting a little refresh. New lights can be seen through the disguise on this prototype, but Ford's new three bar grille design isn’t part of the new look. A few changes to the rear bumper are part of the reskin as well, but don't expect any changes under the hood as this refresh is a cosmetic upgrade only. And don't be surprised if these changes show up on the 2008 Ford Explorer as well...
The fact that Ford has been planning on bringing a B-class compact car to the U.S. isn't anything new. Official statements from top executives have pretty much confirmed it, and slowly rising gas prices make it seem like a better idea with each passing month. So when these spy photos revealed a next generation Ford Fiesta hatchback testing in the U.S...
New pictures of the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V surfaced recently and as usual, they were accompanied by a flood of speculation about what lies under the hood. Most of that speculation was fueled by the hood itself as it was sporting a rather large bulge that seemed to indicate the presence of a supercharger.
One popular theory says that bulge is hiding a supercharged version of the 430 horsepower LS3 used in the 2008 Corvette. Another source claims the CTS-V will get an even more potent supercharged powerplant with as much as 600hp...
More images of the upcoming BMW 1 Series have been snapped, and this time sans most of the camo. As you can see, it's classic BMW, only on a slightly smaller scale. I'd be curious as to how this stacks size-wise with the 3 Series coupe, as it doesn't appear to be that much smaller.
Looks like the 2008 BMW 6 Series is getting some exterior updates. Well, actually it doesn't look like it's getting some updates, but when you examine these pictures very closely there are some subtle changes to this 6 Series test mule that indicate a midcycle refresh. The front air dam has a slightly different shape around the fog lights while the rear end is sporting a slightly revised fascia as well. We didnt catch any interior shots, but we're guessing the 6 Series will get the same shifter first introduced in the X5 along with some minor trim changes...
