Question of the Day - What will my MPG be?

Question: How can I determine the miles per gallon I can expect at Interstate Highway Speeds for the new cars I am considering? EPA Highway does not measure that. I purchased a 2005 Buick Rendezvous with EPA Highway of 26, but the best I can get at 75 is 20. I don't want to make that mistake again...

Answer: There is no way to accurately predict what your car will get at 75 mph. In some of our reviews, we post the figure that we have observed in test drives, and this is more accurate than the EPA estimates. If you want to make an educated guess, at Edmunds we have discovered that EPA estimated mileages are an average of 14 percent high for most vehicles. Use that rule of thumb as you shop for a new car.

If highway mileage is of interest to you, check out any current car magazine. They will typically show the highway mileage in their comparision tests. Believe me these guys aren't typically the ones doing the actual speed limit, they will usually divulge that info in any of the articles.
