2008 VW Jetta 2.5 SE: Good From All Angles
The Volkswagen Jetta was introduced in 1980 as a sedan version of VW's Golf/Rabbit hatchback. The Jetta body style was developed in part for the North American market that gravitated more towards sedans. They were right on target. The Jetta became a best-selling European car in the United States and Canada...
The original 78-horsepower, 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine paired with a 5-speed manual transmission has morphed into a 2.5 L 170 hp for 2008 with mpg of 21/29. Moving into the future, VW has unwrapped a BlueTec Concept model of the Jetta. (see picture below)
I took the VW Jetta out for a spin the other day. True to what I've been reading about it, this small sedan had smooth handling, confident braking, an excellent turning radius and enough power for my needs. It gets four and five star ratings from the NHTSA (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).
At a starting price of $20,989, the 2.5 Jetta sits in a similar price range to sedans that include; Ford Fusion, Mercury Milan, Mitsubishi Galant, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima, Hyundai Sonata and the Honda Civic.
So, the first question is," Would I buy a VW Jetta?" My test car had all those features that I think are important. Like dual illuminated vanity mirrors, a height adjust telescoping steering column, heated outside mirrors, ambient lighting in the footwells and adjustable height and lumbar support for the front seats, a good sound system and a sunroof. Plus, the power, the safety and handling were as noted, just fine.
Enough room for my family? Well, probably not. I have two growing teens and two dogs.
Aside from all that...this is a recommendable vehicle. It's like granola with milk. If you're looking for a sedan with some attitude...well, you won't find it here. Then again, that's a matter of opinion.
