Lee's Deal of the Week - Kia Borrego

As they say, in life, timing is everything. The Kia Borrego is suffering from bad timing. Kia launched the truck-based Borrego SUV at the same time last summer when gas was hitting an all-time high. An all-new SUV that is rated as low as 15 mpg and gas prices over $4/gallon are like oil and water, they don't mix. Gas prices are down now, but so are overall vehicle sales. We all know that the recession has continued to decimate the sale of all cars and trucks. As a result, last month, Kia sold 272 Borregos. Do I smell a deal of the week?

Most buyers have decided to look past rugged body-on-frame SUV's for promise of the more compliant ride, superior fuel economy and better space utilization of a cross-over SUV. There is still a small market for a rugged body-on-frame SUV. However, that market is already pretty well covered by the likes of the Ford Explorer, Nissan Pathfinder, Toyota's 4Runner and FJ Cruiser and even the Jeep Grand Cherokee. But Kia felt they could one-up this competition by offering a vehicle that looked and felt more upmarket and offered more capability.

The Borrego offers an interior that feels relatively luxurious, has a long list of premium options, has class-leading towing ability, a powerful V6 and an optional V8, standard 3rd row seating and an independent rear suspension. In addition, it comes with Kia's impressive 10 year/100K mile warranty. Oh, and that fuel economy? The V8 powered 4X4 model actually gets the same fuel economy as a V6 Acura MDX, according to the EPA. The Borrego does it on regular, vs the premium fuel required on the MDX.

So the Borrego is actually a pretty impressive SUV. But what makes it a deal of the week is that Kia is offering $3,000 customer cash on the Borrego. Or you can choose 0% financing for up to 60 months, along with $1000 bonus cash. These offers run through March 2nd. So if you need to tow 7,500 lbs, or do some moderate off-roading, or need a three row conveyance, or want a 10 year warranty or need to carry lots of cargo, while all wrapped in a handsome interior and exterior, the Kia Borrego might be a good choice for you to consider.

Its a good looking SUV, and would definitely be on my list if I needed on. They could have done a little more with the interior though.

@ pat1usmc: double-tap? lol

Yes...funny! I have a twitchy trigger finger. That's what I get for trying to correct a typo after I pressed submit.

I found it to be pretty impressive. But then, I'm Lee Borrego. Catcha on the rebound....lee yep....borrego
