Used Car Corner: Five-pointed Star Meets Three-pointed Star

2008 chrysler crossfire.jpg

Chrysler isn't getting much respect these days, and rightfully so. My colleagues regularly ridicule many Mopar products, from the Playschool-like Dodge Caliber to the underwhelming Sebring. But did you know that Chrysler offered a stylish coupe and convertible that featured a Mercedes-Benz platform and engine?  Well, from 2004 to 2008, they did.

Sharing chassis components with the first-generation SLK roadster, including its 215-hp V6, the Crossfire may seem dated under the skin, but it furnished solid performance nonetheless. Those looking for more of a thrill were well served with the SRT-6 version, which boasted a supercharged, 330-hp version of the V6 along with a stiffer suspension (perhaps too much so for most folks) for even sharper handling.

Though it wasn't a big bang in the marketplace when new, a Chrysler Crossfire as a used car allows you to have German engineering and American pizzazz at a bargain price. I've seen a number of convertible examples on eBay with very low mileage with "Buy it Now" prices for under $20,000.

I am continued to be turned off by chrysler's insistence on those horrible hood designs. There are interesting details elsewhere, such as the headlights and some rear details.

"Stylish" coupe is in the eye of the beholder.

I always thought they had kind of a short, big "butt." And as rtgarcia mentions, the hood on it has weird lines.

If you want a truly sharp handling 2 seater convertible for under $20k, you're probably much better off with a Miata. Not that I'm biased :)

I think the Crossfire is the worst styling mistake of the dark German Chrysler years.... even worse then the Caliber.

I think the Caliber actually looks OK from a distance. It's only the cheap details that let it down.

The Crosfire looks wrong from no matter where you look.

I think the hardtop Crossfire looks ok but they didn't remain faithful to the concept car. It lost the battle in many of the details like the headlights.

The vert is ok and I agree with the article, it's a cheap, solid thrill.

The Crossfire coupe's side profile has always reminded me of a dog hunched over doing its "business".

Sorry, but I had to say it...
