Dangerous Dining: Ketchup on the Highway

DineDrive01.jpg

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), eating is one of the most distracting activities you can do while driving. We contend that it's not as risky as building a model airplane while driving, but we can certainly see their point.

Insurance.com has compiled their top 10 most dangerous foods to eat while driving list and we have it for you here, along with some of our own additions.

1. Coffee

2. Hot Soup

3. Tacos

4. Chili

5. Hamburgers

6. Barbecued Food

7. Fried Chicken

8. Jelly or cream-filled donuts

9. Soft drinks

10. Chocolate

We think these dishes should also be added the list:

Ortolan - Illegal even in France. You're supposed to drape your head in a napkin to eat it.

Lobster - At least the cupholders can handle the butter

King crab legs - Much like the lobster, but potentially more messy

Banana Splits - Imagine the mess if the airbags deploy

Fajitas - Super-heated iron skillets and driving don't mix

Fondue - Molten cheese and open flame could spell disaster

Corn on the Cob - If the act of eating doesn't cause a crash, extricating the kernels from your teeth will

Tarte Flambee - Or indeed, any flaming dish

S'mores - We don't think the climate control would get hot enough

Epoises Cheese - The smell will make rescue workers think you've been dead for weeks

Totally saw an older gentleman completely fixated on his cup of coffee doing about 50mph on an onramp on to I-90 this morning. Both hands off the wheel. Looked like he was adjusting the top or something. Ridiculous

Let's BAN 'EM ALL!! Yes! More stuff we can BAN! So many states are starting to ban texting and cell phone usage - it's about damn time someone else other than me FINALLY woke up and started thinking about other stuff we can ban that can cause distracted driving.

I say when we ban eating and drinking in our cars (hey, this ban is for YOUR own good...), let's then ban all drive-thru windows at fast-food places. And no "to-go" orders either - anything bought must be consumed on the premises for a time period of no less than 30 minutes after purchase.

Oh the possibilities are endless...
