Used Car Corner: Cars as Milestones of Our Lives
Being a car geek, I tend to date things by what car I (or a relative or friend) was driving or what happened in car news that year. "Remember your old girlfriend, Melissa? How long ago was that?" a buddy recently asked me. "Man, that was ages ago. I had just gotten my '88 MR2 SC at the time so it was 1995."
Remembering what years my siblings were born works the same way...my older sister Elaine? 1957 because it was the first year of fuel injection for the Corvette (as well as other GM cars). Nieces and nephews? Same thing. My godkid Kendra was born in '96. I know, because it was the last year of the Nissan 300ZX (which was the last Japanese sports car casualty of the time thanks to the weak dollar / strong yen relationship of the early-mid-'90s).
I know (hope?!) I'm not the only car guy that does this. How about y'all? Do you remember your wedding anniversary by what you were driving or what happened in the automotive world?

Let's see, the year of our wedding I owned only my '02 Mustang, and the wife had her '01 Eclipse. That same year we bought our fuel miser, the '07 Focus, and very early the next year we traded in the Eclipse for a '05 F-150 King Ranch. No nieces or nephews. I think I remember things the opposite of you. I don't remember dates by what I was driving... I remember what I was driving by what was going on in my life at that time.
Same here - to some degree, not as much as you.
