2010 Volkswagen Golf Pricing and Fuel Economy Announced

Somewhere Elmer Fudd is rejoicing -- the Rabbit is no more. For 2010, North America gets the sixth-generation Volkswagen Golf that was introduced last year in Europe and this time it will keep its name, ditching the retro Rabbit moniker applied to the fifth-generation Golf.
A base, two-door Golf with the 2.5-liter five-cylinder will start at $17,490, while the four-door begins at $19,190. Unlike the 09 Rabbit, the 2010 Golf will be available in TDI diesel form, starting at $21,990 for the two-door and $22,590 for the four-door. Like the Jetta, the TDI will have a higher level of equipment than the base, gasoline version. The GTI has also been overhauled for 2010 and will start at $23,290.
Fuel economy after the jump.
According to the EPA's fueleconomy.gov Web site, the 2.5-liter Golf will return 23 mpg city/30 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined with the six-speed automatic, and 22/30/25 with the five-speed manual. The Rabbit returned 20/29/24 and 21/30/24, with those respective transmissions.
The Golf TDI will return 30/42/34 with the six-speed DSG automatic and 30/41/34 with the six-speed manual. The 2010 VW GTI fuel economy figures are 24/32/27 with DSG, and 21/31/25 with the manual. For comparison, the 2009 GTI returned 22/29/25 and 21/31/25, respectively. As you've probably noticed, the GTI numbers are also better than the five-cylinder Golf.

Why even offer the NA version? Golf TDI and Golf GTI.
greenpony, a $4500 premium is still more than some people want to deal with.
Personally, I'm wary of diesel. Because you get less diesel from a barrel of oil, it's price would skyrocket if diesel became the new standard. Under those circumstances, gasoline would be dirt cheap. I can't predict the future, so I don't know which way I'd go. Biodiesel is another variable.
Well, brn, the GTD also offers that diesel torque you don't get from normal gas engine.... :-)
