Monterey Historics at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca
A large part of the annual weekend at Pebble Beach is the Rolex Monterey Historic Automobile Races held at nearby Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca. For 2009, the featured marque was Porsche, resulting in the most impressive gathering of racing Porsche since the 2007 Rennsport Reunion III at Daytona.
The event also provided Porsche an opportunity to show off its new Panamera sedan, making its first public display as pace car and shuttling VIPs around the 2.238-mile rollercoaster track (right).
Though the vintage races include a wealth of marques -- Porsche was the star of the show (above), with racing versions of nearly every vintage taking to the track, from the pre-sponsor-sticker days (right), up through the slant-nose Coca-Cola sponsored 930's.
The variety of cars circling Mazda Raceway at any given point often defies description -- including pre-war Alfas (left) - making the event a must see for any vintage racing fan.
