Green Car Advisor: Future EV Stations Could Make Battery Swaps Faster than Pumping Gas

2010 Chevy Camaro SS vs. 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T vs. 2010 Ford Mustang GT
Q: What's another name for a mullet? A: A Camaro crash helmet. Yes, in the past, the Camaro and its drivers have been the butt of countless jokes, but the 2010 model year brings with it an all-new version of this classic pony car -- one that demands your respect, dangit. Does it have the goods to take down the Challenger and the Mustang?

Americans Finding Fuel-Efficient Compact Cars Aren't So Small
Many small cars are currently gathering dust on dealer lots; still, compacts have replaced midsize models as the volume leader in new-car sales, and many analysts expect this trend to continue. But there's a catch: If you were to get out your measuring tape, you'd find that today's compacts are really yesterday's midsize models. Like the populace at large (pun intended), our cars have added both pounds and inches. Happily, smaller cars have also added appealing luxury features that were unheard of in the cramped econoboxes of yesteryear.

Buick, Jaguar Tops For Vehicle Dependability
How times have changed. A couple decades ago, Buick was riding low with cars like the bottom-feeding Skylark, and Jaguar electronics were as good a bet as the stock market these days. Now, according to J.D. Power's 2009 Vehicle Dependability Survey, Buick and Jaguar are tied for first place, edging out longtime leaders Toyota and Lexus.

2009 BMW Z4 Roadster First Drive
With a sleek new retractable hardtop design and an available 300-hp twin-turbocharged inline-6 under the hood, the 2009 BMW Z4 is nothing less than a reinvention of the Z roadster series. We've driven it. We like it. Shame about those twin drooping cutlines that dive-bomb the front wheelwells though.

2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Long-Term Introduction
We've heard about the muscle car's last hurrah before, yet somehow these tire-shredding V8-powered behemoths keep coming back to life. Dodge's latest effort sports a decidedly retro shape, though the interior is straight out of the Challenger's Charger sedan platform-mate. We couldn't resist picking one up for a year-long test. Our editors will be driving the Challenger on a nightly basis, so stay tuned to the inimitable Long-Term Blog for frequent logbook entries.

Except for Europeans, Vehicle Manufacturers Ditch Diesel Plans
Plans to use clean-running diesel engines for U.S. passenger cars are being shredded almost daily as troubles in the auto industry deepen, with the latest backtracking said to be coming from Nissan. The Japanese company confirmed in early 2008 it would launch a sophisticated 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6 for the Maxima later this year, but those plans appear to be cancelled, or at least on hold.

2010 Aptera 2e First Drive and Video
The Aptera 2e is a three-wheel electric vehicle that looks like the spawn of an unholy union between a Cessna and an Indy car. If it were any more futuristic, it would have warp nacelles and be driven by Chewbacca. The Aptera costs $25,000 and can travel 100 miles before needing a recharge. Our Green Car Advisor, John O'Dell, took it for a spin.

Camaro Fuel Economy and Other Information Released
The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro is now in production. According the GM, 14,000 have already rolled off the line in Oshawa, Ontario -- most of them SS models. GM also announced the official EPA mileage estimates. The base 304-hp V6 will return 18 mpg city and 29 mpg highway when paired with a six-speed automatic. By comparison, the 210-hp Mustang V6 with five-speed automatic returns 16/24. I don't know, do you think that's worth the extra $2,000 a base Camaro will cost?

Incentives Not Letting Up -- Even for New Products
Normally, a car maker doesn't put incentives on an all new model. They usually test the market waters first and see what kind of reaction the car gets from the buying masses. But in today's economy they don't have that "let's wait and see" time luxury and need to do whatever they can to scrape up some sales action, pronto. Hence incentives on all-new models such as the Hyundai Genesis coupe and Mercedes-Benz GLK compact crossover.

GM Pulls the Plug on Diesel Power for its Light-Duty Pickups
Although the 4.5-liter Duramax turbodiesel V8 was fully developed, GM decided to shelve the program for a few reasons. One is that in the light-duty truck sector, the diesel would require expensive exhaust treatment technology to meet the latest emissions standards. The other chief reason is that diesel engine options tend to be pricey and GM wasn't certain that folks in these cash-strapped times would want to pony up the additional cost at purchase time. GM states that they do want to build this engine and would consider a joint-venture manufacturing of the baby Duramax.

Revised Fuel Economy Ratings For 2010 Prius: Better City, Worse Highway
We've often cited Toyota's estimates of 50 mpg city/49 highway for the 2010 Toyota Prius, but it turns out that there was "a misinterpretation of the primary data," according to a Toyota spokeswoman. But don't worry, Prius fans -- the official figures are 51 mpg city/48 highway, for an identical 50 mpg combined rating.

BMW's New Real-Time Traffic Technology May Justify HD Radio's Existence
If you're like most consumers, you probably don't understand why we needed something called HD radio, a digital refinement of traditional analog radio technology. But BMW claims to have come up with a clear use for HD radio and its high-speed data transfer capabilities. BMW's new "advanced traffic information" system utilizes HD radio to transmit real-time traffic data more rapidly than existing systems, according to company sources. If it works as well as BMW suggests, this might be the savior HD radio desperately needs.

News Flash: Congressional Panel Considers Underhanded Used Car Dealer Practices
A congressional panel commenced hearings yesterday on the issue of whether used car dealers have been taking advantage of low-income buyers during the economic downturn. The shady tactics under consideration include misrepresenting the condition of used cars and saddling shoppers with extraneous fees and high interest rates on loans. Since many low-income buyers lack Internet access, they may have no way of knowing whether they're being taken for a ride. If the panel uncovers a pattern of abuse, the Federal Trade Commission could elect to strengthen existing regulations or issue new ones in order to provide adequate consumer protection.

California Pitches Vehicular Emissions Reduction Plan To EPA; Public Comment Period Expires April 6
California took its case to the EPA earlier this week, arguing that the state should be allowed to set greenhouse gas standards for motor vehicles within its borders as well as for the 13 other California-compliant states. Ferrari Readies Hybrid Technology For Production
Legendary sports car maker Ferrari seems to be making good on its promise to green its lineup going forward. Work is underway on a hybrid powertrain that could be ready by 2015. Employing technology that debuted on Ferrari's racecars, the powertrain would likely consist of a rear-axle-driven generator that powers a storage battery, which in turn animates an electric supercharger for a shot of extra speed.

Ford's New Ads Bill Fusion As Most Fuel-Efficient Sedan In America
American Idol viewers, brace yourselves. Ford has prepared an advertising onslaught for tonight's episode, and the subject is the extensively refreshed 2010 Ford Fusion and 2010 Ford Fusion Hybrid midsize sedans. Ford's market research shows that many would-be Ford buyers are deterred by the company's reputation for building gas-guzzling vehicles, so the central thrust of the Fusion campaign will be its improved MPGs. Hey, they've got a point -- the EPA has certified the Hybrid model at 36 mpg city/41 highway, while even the base four-cylinder model comes in at an impressive 23 mpg city/34 highway.

2009 GM Hybrid Pickups: Lots Of Green Tech, But Will It Sell At Such High Cost?
GM's new dual-mode hybrid pickups get appreciably better gas mileage than their conventionally-powered counterparts, and they're eligible for a federal tax credit, too. However, they're still considerably more expensive than comparably equipped regular models, and the hybrid powertrain has some quirks. Will truck buyers be persuaded to pay thousands more for these high-tech pickups? We're not so sure.

GEM Electric Vehicles Likely Eligible For 10% Tax Break
Details remain somewhat hazy, but it appears that Global Electric Motorcars (GEM) products are eligible for a 10% federal income tax credit, courtesy of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). You've probably seen these funky-looking electric conveyances in urban areas and on college campuses, and now you'll get money back from the government if you buy one. Edmunds Green Car Advisor's in-depth discussion of ARRA sheds light on what this legislation means for various green vehicles.

Tesla To Open Midwest Center; Musk Says Company No Niche Player
Rumors of Tesla's epic struggles have been greatly exaggerated, judging by company chairman Elon Musk's ambitious plan to forge ahead with an electric sedan to complement the Tesla Roadster. The sedan, known as the "Model S," will start at about $57,000, which is tens of thousands cheaper than the Roadster. Tesla also aims to open a regional sales and service center in Chicago this spring, and six other centers are supposedly in the works. One catch: the company will need $350 billion in federal loans to make it all happen.

Car Owners Hanging Onto Their Current Rides
Car owners, as suspected, are hanging onto their current vehicles longer -- and longer and longer. In 2004, the average trade-in was 4.32 years old. For 2008, the average trade-in was 5.3 years old. In the first two months of this year, the age jumped to 5.95 years old. I suppose they just don't make'em like they used to.

I have always despised valet parking, and this week's latest "Confessions" article only confirms my hatred. When we decided to delve into the secret life of valet parking attendants, we expected some stories about concealed door dings, petty theft or occasional hijinks behind the wheel. But we had no idea the extent to which some valets routinely take liberties with their customers' property. In other words, I won't be valeting my car tonight.

America Losing Interest in Keeping Detroit Afloat
A survey conducted by the USA Today newspaper and Gallup poll this week found only 25 percent of Americans believe the government should continue lending money to Detroit automakers. In December, before the government approved emergency auto loans, 61 percent favored federal help for the automakers. Perhaps those corporate jets had something to do with. Maybe it was the Pontiac Solstice Coupe.
