GM is recalling some 2006-'07 Chevrolet Cobalts, Saturn Ions and Pontiac G5s because a couple crack-prone parts could lead to a fuel leak -- and the wrong kind of ignition when you turn the key.
Here's what NHTSA has to say: "The plastic supply or return port on the modular reservoir assembly may crack. If either of these ports develops a crack, fuel will leak from the area. If the crack becomes large enough, fuel may be observed dripping onto the ground." So what? "Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition, could result in a fire." Yikes.

Nissan is recalling more than 160,000 of its 2008 and 2009 Rogue CUVs because a screw may come loose in the steering gear housing. A loose screw will result in compromised steering response, but the driver will still have steering control. If the screw falls out entirely and the driver steers hard, the pinion shaft may come out of the steering gear and the driver would lose all steering control.
This recall is expected to begin in November. Nissan dealers will tighten the screw if it is loose and install a cover plate to prevent future loosening, free of charge. Owners can contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261, the NHTSA Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236, or go to Safercar.gov. The NHTSA recall I.D. number is 09V411000.

Nissan and Infiniti have recalled 143,223 vehicles due to a potential defect with the tire pressure monitor system (TPMS). Affected are Infiniti M35 and M45 vehicles made in model years 2008-2010; Nissan Cubes and Muranos made in model year 2009; and Nissan Rogues made in model year 2008.
According to NHTSA, road salt could cause the nut used to secure the TPMS' sensor-transmitter to corrode or crack. If the TPMS lamp is disregarded and drivers continue to pilot the vehicle in this condition, they could get a flat tire, and an accident could occur. Because of the nature of this defect, only vehicles sold in cold-weather states have been recalled.
The defective nut will be replaced by Nissan and Infiniti dealers free of charge, and the recall is set to officially kick off on or before November 9. For more information, owners may contact Nissan at 1-800-647-7261 and Infiniti at 1-800-662-6200.

Ford and Mazda are issuing a voluntary recall of an additional 4.5 million vehicles for a faulty cruise control deactivation switch, the latest of eight recalls for the same problem. The switch can leak hydraulic fluid, overheat and then burn, even if the cruise control isn't activated or the vehicle is turned off or unattended.
Although Ford is unaware of any accidents, injuries or fatalities related to the problem, it is urging all owners of recalled vehicles to immediately make a service appointment with a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury dealer and not to park vehicles in garages or near homes until repairs are made.

Audi has issued a recall on A3 hatchbacks made during model years 2006-2010, and on model year 2008-2010 TT coupes and roadsters. The problem concerns a faulty fuel tank ventilation valve.
According to NHTSA, a defective spring in this valve isn't strong enough to hold the valve closed during extreme driving conditions. This could cause a fuel leak that, in the presence of an ignition source, could trigger a vehicle fire.
Owners may take their recalled vehicles in to Audi dealers where the valves will be replaced free of charge. For more details, contact Audi at 1-800-253-2834.

Making its floor mat bulletin official, Toyota yesterday recalled 3.8 million vehicles -- the largest Toyota recall ever and the country's sixth-largest. A loose floor mat is being blamed for the August death of California Highway Patrol Officer Mark Saylor, his wife and two children, prompting the recall of the following vehicles:
2007 - 2010 Camry
2005 - 2010 Avalon
2004 - 2009 Prius
2005 - 2010 Tacoma
2007 - 2010 Tundra

Prompted by recent events in the news and a warning from NHTSA, Toyota has launched a safety advisory, urging vehicle owners to immediately remove their driver's side floor mats.
According to the advisory from Toyota and NHTSA, unsecured floor mats can get caught on the accelerator pedal, and potentially cause an accident. Toyota estimates that 3.8 million models may be affected. This advisory is not yet a recall. Once they have a solution in place, this safety advisory will become the largest recall that Toyota has ever issued in the U.S.

Nissan has announced that it is recalling 26,398 2009 and 2010 Altimas and Maximas because a strut rod could become dislodged from its mount, affecting vehicle stability and increasing the risk of a crash, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
Nissan notes that if the strut rod became compromised, it "would begin to make a loud noise audible to the vehicle operator."
There are no reports of injuries or crashes due to this issue, but as a precaution, Nissan dealers will replace left and ride side front strut insulators for free. The recall is expected to begin on October 5. Owners may contact Nissan at (615) 725-1000.

If you own a turbocharged Lancer, your next trip may be to the dealership for a new fuel pipe. Mitsubishi has recalled 6,903 turbocharged Lancer Evolution, Ralliart and Sportback Ralliart vehicles made in model years 2008 and 2009. According to NHTSA, these vehicles may develop vibration-related stress cracks in their fuel pipes. A crack could cause fuel leakage, which in turn has the potential to cause a fire.
Mitsubishi will replace the fuel pipe free of charge, and will also install two additional brackets to better manage fuel-pipe vibration. The recall is set to begin on or before September 29, 2009. For more information, owners may visit SaferCar.gov, or contact Mitsubishi at 1-888-327-4236.

My first car -- a used 1975 Dodge Royal Monaco -- used to stall in the middle of intersections in the dead of winter, even if I had warmed it up quite a while. This was a pretty frightening experience for a 16-year-old. Then came fuel injection in the '80s and, later, more advanced electronic control units (ECUs), and things improved greatly.
Now, though, Volvo is recalling almost 12,000 cars for an electrical system software problem that could cause the car to stall suddenly after driving a short distance at idle -- potentially resulting in a crash. Model year and vehicles affected by the recall are 2008-2010 Volvo S80, 2009-2010 Volvo XC70, and 2010 XC60.

Certain Toyota and Scion owners may want to pay a visit to their dealers before winter sets in. Toyota has recalled 95,700 Toyota- and Scion-brand vehicles in cold-weather states, due to a potential brake malfunction problem that could flare up in frigid temperatures.
Recalled models include 2008 and 2009 Scion xDs, as well as 2009 and 2010 Toyota Corolla and Matrix vehicles. In colder weather, affected vehicles may suffer ice accumulation that could lead to weakened power-assist to the brakes.
To remedy this problem, a new intake air conditioner must be installed; this replacement will be performed by the dealer free of charge. The recall covers the following states: Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, North Dakota, South Dakota, Vermont, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Vehicle owners in the 19 affected states will begin receiving recall notices in early September.

As our sister site InsideLine has reported, VW and its uptown cousin Audi have issued a voluntary joint recall for some vehicles equipped with the DSG automated-clutch manual transmission ("S-Tronic" in Audi-speak). Both carmakers have stated that a faulty temperature sensor could light up a warning light in the instrument panel, and in rare cases, the transmission could shift into neutral. About 13,500 VWs and 2,500 Audis have been affected.
Though a recall notice has yet to be posted by NHTSA (safercar.gov), both carmakers have said that they will contact owners of the affected vehicles in the coming weeks to have their vehicles inspected and repaired. Owners of these models may also call Volkswagen at (800) 444-8982 or Audi at (800) 253-2834 if they have any questions.
Affected Vehicles:
VW: 2009-2010 Jetta, Jetta SportWagen, GTI and Eos.
Audi: 2009 A3, TT and TT Roadster

Honda has announced that they will issue recall notices for over 400,000 vehicles due to an airbag over-pressurization problem. Only certain 2001-2002 Accords, 2001 Civics and 2002-2003 Acura TLs are affected by this recall. According to Honda, "If an affected inflator deploys, the increased internal pressure may cause the inflator casing to rupture. Metal fragments could pass through the cloth airbag cushion material, possibly causing an injury or fatality to vehicle occupants."
Those who might be affected may check their vehicle's recall status by visiting www.owners.honda.com/recalls or www.owners.acura.com/recalls. Owners are encouraged to wait to receive a recall notice in the mail before scheduling an appointment with their local dealer.

Owners of 2001 Honda Accord and Civic sedans should be aware that Honda has issued a recall for these vehicles due to a potentially faulty driver airbag inflator. The concern is that the inflator may rupture when activated, meaning, in NHTSA's rather ominous words, that "metal fragments could pass through the airbag cushion material, possibly causing injury."
Honda dealers will replace the inflator free of charge, though a start date has not been finalized. Owners can contact Honda at 1-800-999-1009 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236 for more information, and details of the recall are after the jump.

Today the National Highway Safety Transportation Administration (NHTSA) issued a recall for all 2008 BMW 1 Series and 3 Series cars. Incorrect crimp connectors may have been used on the side airbag and seat belt tensioner wiring in the front seat. This could result in the airbag or seat belt failing to act when needed, increasing the injury risk. Side impact crashes are more common than frontal crashes.
BMW hasn't issued a plan for the recall yet, but owners should call BMW at 1-800-831-1117. The campaign ID number is 09V257000, and owners can also contact the NHTSA Safety Hotline at at 1-888-327-4236 or go to Safercar.gov.

Ford Motor Company announced a recall of the 2009 Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator SUVs for an improperly adjusted brake lamp switch. An estimated 1,357 vehicles are thought to have been affected. According to NHTSA's recall summary, "this may result in a delay in brake stoplamp illumination when the brake pedal is depressed. In situations of very mild brake application, the brake stoplamps may not illuminate."
All Ford and Lincoln dealers will adjust the stoplamps switch free of charge. Owners with the affected vehicles can get more details from a few sources: the Ford Customer Relationship Center can be reached at (866) 436-7332 or at ownerconnection.com, the National Highway Traffic Administration's vehicle safety hotline (888) 327-4326, and safercar.gov. For reference, this is Ford recall NO.09C09.
