Auto Observer: The Secret of Subaru's Success
Subaru has made the right series of moves to keep them profitable in a time when most automakers are struggling to keep their head above water. Their timely redesigns, adherence to all wheel drive, and unexpected appeal to upscale buyers has made them one of the biggest success stories of 2009.
IL News: Priced: 2010 Dodge Ram Heavy Duty
The 2010 Dodge Ram 2500 regular cab 4X2 will start at $28,165. According to Dodge, this price is $1,970 lower than the outgoing 2009 base model. More details on available trim levels after the jump.
Green Car Advisor: Nissan Schedules Leaf EV National Tour, But No Test Drive Opportunities
Nissan will be holding an 11-state, 24 city pre-sale tour of the five-passenger, 100-miles-per-charge Leaf hatchback it plans to launch in the U.S. next year. You won't be able to drive it, but you can see what it looks like in person and ask plenty of questions.

Some cars get more credit than they deserve, while others languish in obscurity because of any number of factors -- lack of brand prestige, poor advertising, odd styling. Yet here are five from popular segments that are certainly worth a test drive.

The beauty of the California coast is well documented -- from the first missionaries making their way up on donkeys to the countless films that took advantage of the spectacular scenery. With 1,264 coastal miles, there's also a whopping amount of beauty, accounting for 10 percent of the United States' total coast line. To see it all would take a long time, longer than I had in one weekend, and to truly experience it all would probably take a lifetime.
With San Diego to Santa Barbara already in the bag, I decided to venture further north than I have before. I've been to San Francisco, but that was on Interstate 5 through the central valley. My buddy and I would head beyond Santa Barbara up Highway 101, veering off onto the Pacific Coast Highway to San Simeon, then back inland to Paso Robles. To make the journey, I would employ the all-new 2010 Subaru Outback 2.5i, a car that has been overfilling our readers' mailbox with inquiries about how it does in the real world. A full Edmunds test drive is still a few weeks away, though, so hopefully these thoughts will sate their appetites in the meantime.

The Insurance Instutute for Highway Safety just announced that the Subaru Legacy, Subaru Outback, Chrysler Sebring and Dodge Avenger have all earned its prestigious "Top Safety Pick" award. This is a rather difficult honor to achieve, as a vehicle must have stability control as a standard feature and earn the agency's top rating of "Good" in its frontal offset, side impact and rear crash tests.

The latest highlights from Edmunds.com and its blogosphere.
Green Car Advisor: Nissan Turns New Leaf with "Affordable" EV
The Nissan "Leaf" is the company's newest entry into the electric vehicle market. This five seat hatchback is expected to have a range of 100 miles per charge, and a top speed of 90 mph. The Leaf will be available for purchase in select U.S cities by the end of 2010, with an estimated price range of $28,000-$35,000.
Inside Line: 2010 Subaru Outback First Drive
The redesigned Subaru Outback is larger and better equipped than the outgoing model. The 2010 Outback's increased size has changed its prospective competitors. It will now face off against the Toyota Venza and the Hyundai Santa Fe, rather than the Audi A4 Avant and the Volkswagen Passat 4Motion.
AutoObserver: Feds: Cash For Clunkers Saving Gas
The success of the Car Allowance Rebate System (aka Cash for Clunkers) has succeeded in getting gas guzzlers off the road and into more fuel efficient vehicles. According to the Obama Administration, 83 percent of the trade-in vehicles have been trucks. Additionally, the program has improved fuel economy by an average of 61 percent per vehicle.

Owners of 2005 and 2006 Subaru Baja crossover pickup trucks should be aware that a recall has been issued due to a weak fuel hose connection. This defect may cause a pressurized fuel leak near the fuel pump which may result in a fire.
Subaru will replace the fuel pump bracket and connections free of charge beginning September 2009. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 or NHTSA at 1-888-327-4236. Additional detail can be found at www.safercar.gov.

Smeared greasepaint reveals how curtain airbags can protect a driver's head from hitting hard surfaces.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) usually tests 4-door family cars, but recently responded to public demand by conducting front, side, and rear tests of 2009 coupes, including the Chevrolet Cobalt, Ford Focus, Honda Civic, and Scion tC, all small models, plus the midsize Volvo C30. The 2009 Ford Focus and 2009 Volvo C30 took top honors.
In the side-impact test, which simulates being struck by a pickup or SUV, all five cars were judged "Good" or "Acceptable. Notably, while the other four coupes were rated "Good" in the frontal offset sets, the Scion tC was rated only acceptable.

Off-roaders know that they have to give up a little fuel-efficiency for the privilege of driving an AWD vehicle. Subaru is countering that idea with their all-new 2010 Outback, which will be available at the end of August. The base model 2.5i with CVT transmission gets up to 24 mpg combined and 29 mpg highway, even while interior volume is up over 7-percent.
The combined mpg beats the Toyota Venza, Volvo XC70, VW Passat, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ford Explorer, and the smaller Suzuki SX-4 AWD.
The new Outback with the 170HP 4-cylinder Boxer engine goes for $23,995 MSRP, $700 more than the outgoing Outback 2.5i with auto transmission. It's less quirky-looking than the outgoing model, as well.

Subaru redesigned its compact Impreza for 2008, and made some additional, and notable, improvements for 2009. These improvements include standard stability control and 4-wheel disc brakes, along with a "hill holder" feature on manual transmission models. Couple this with standard AWD, a torque-rich boxer engine and superb crash test scores and you have a vehicle that should appeal to people both in and out of the snow-belt.
Of course, the compact segment is full of competent competitors like the Ford Focus, Mazda3, Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic. In an effort to make more consumers take notice of the sometimes overlooked Impreza, Subaru has rolled out some impressive Impreza incentives. Read about them after the jump.

Robert De Niro's filmography includes such classics as The Godfather, Heat and, yes, Meet the Parents. Now you can add a 2010 Subaru Legacy commercial to his resume. You won't see it stateside (check it out on YouTube), as it seems Mr. De Niro made the TV spot for the Japan market only. It's a Lost in Translation moment. It's actually too bad he won't be plugging the new Legacy here, though, as Subaru's redesigned midsize sedan could benefit from some added star power.
This time around, the all-wheel-drive Legacy should appeal to more mainstream buyers and not just those who live in rainy or snowy climes. The 2010 Legacy is bigger and roomier (what newly redesigned car isn't these days?), but it's also more fuel efficient and priced more competitively.
We recently had the opportunity to drive the new Legacy at a manufacturer-sponsored event. Highlights and first impressions follow after the jump.
